The Department of Child Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, organized an Adjunct Faculty Lecture and Effective Alumni Engagement Guest Lecture Series – 02/2026 on March 5, 2026, at the Workshop Room, 5th Floor, MCON. The session titled “Professional Portfolio Building for Academic and Career Development” was conducted from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for II PBBSc and II MSc Nursing students.

The session was delivered by Dr. Vishnu Renjith, Program Director and Lecturer, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Honorary Senior Lecturer, School of Medicine, Cardiff University. Dr. Renjith also serves as an Adjunct Faculty at Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE.

Dr. Renjith began the session by discussing the concept of career stagnation in the nursing profession, highlighting how professionals may remain within their comfort zones without actively updating their knowledge and skills. He emphasized that professional development is an individual responsibility and that nurses must engage in continuous learning and skill development to achieve sustained career growth. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their long-term career goals and visualize where they aspire to be in the next five years.

The session focused extensively on the concept of a professional portfolio, which was described as a structured collection of documents and evidence demonstrating an individual’s achievements, competencies, and professional development over time. The speaker highlighted that, unlike a curriculum vitae or resume, a professional portfolio is a dynamic document that evolves throughout one’s career and provides comprehensive evidence of professional growth and contributions to the field.

Dr. Renjith explained that a professional portfolio may include certifications, reflective statements, teaching activities, research publications, project reports, volunteering experiences, patient care initiatives, feedback, and testimonials. He also clarified the distinction between a Curriculum Vitae (CV), resume, and professional portfolio, emphasizing their distinct purposes in professional advancement.

A key highlight of the lecture was the introduction of the “PROFESSION Framework”, a practical guide for building a strong professional portfolio. The framework includes: P – Publications and Presentations, R – Research Activities, O – Online Presence, F – Formal Training, E – Engagement in Conferences, S – Service and Volunteering, S – Scholarly Networking, I – Involvement in Professional Associations, O – Opportunities in Innovation, N – Navigating Mentorship. Through this framework, students were encouraged to actively participate in scholarly activities, research, conferences, and professional networking to strengthen their academic and professional profiles.

The speaker also emphasized the importance of mentorship and professional networking, encouraging students to build meaningful connections with mentors and peers who can support their academic and career development. Additionally, the significance of research engagement during postgraduate education and maintaining a strong digital professional identity through platforms such as LinkedIn, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate was highlighted.

The session concluded with an inspiring message encouraging students to identify their areas of interest, develop expertise in their chosen niche, and pursue continuous professional growth with dedication and perseverance.

Overall, the session was highly informative and motivating, providing valuable guidance on strategic career planning, professional portfolio development, and lifelong learning. The interactive lecture inspired participants to actively engage in activities that enhance their professional competencies and prepare them for future academic and career opportunities.

The session aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on Quality Education. A total of 46 students and two faculty members attended the session.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Binu Margaret, Assistant Professor - Selection Grade, Department of Child Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal.
