Workshop Report

The Department of Fundamentals of Nursing and the Department of Community Health Nursing organized a two‑day workshop titled “Advancing Nursing Practice through Palliative Care” on 27th and 28th February 2026 at Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal. The workshop aimed to strengthen nurses’ competencies in delivering holistic and evidence-based palliative care, aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 4: Quality Education.

The sessions were facilitated by a team of distinguished resource persons who shared their expertise across key areas of palliative care. Ms. Alice Stella, Retired Army Nursing Officer and National Faculty in Palliative Nursing, delivered sessions on Introduction to Palliative Care and Management of Common Symptoms, and co-facilitated sessions on Breaking Bad News & Managing Emotions and Nursing Procedures. Dr. Radhika R Pai, Assistant Professor, Manipal College of Nursing, handled Ethical Aspects and Approaches and co-facilitated the session on Breaking Bad News & Managing Emotions. Dr. Malathi G Nayak, Professor, conducted the session on Communication Skills in Palliative Care and co-facilitated the Nursing Procedures. Dr. Seema S Rao, Director of Manipal Hospice Respite Centre, led the session on Psychological and Spiritual Support. Dr. Krithika S Rao, Associate Professor in the Department of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care, Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, facilitated the session on End‑of‑Life Care and Ethics. Together, the experts provided comprehensive interdisciplinary insights that enriched participants’ knowledge and practice in palliative care.

A total of 19 participants from nursing institutions and hospitals across Udupi and Mangalore districts attended the workshop. In addition to theory-based sessions, participants engaged in skill demonstrations, including colostomy care, wound care, and lymphedema bandaging, enhancing their practical understanding of palliative nursing.
