A Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program titled “Handling Critical Moments with Skill and Sensitivity” was organized by the 2nd year M.Sc. Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing Specialty students of Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal, on 29th May 2026 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the 5th floor, Wound Care Lab, MCON, Manipal, Udupi. The program focused on enhancing nurses' clinical competence and communication skills in managing critical situations with efficiency and empathy.
Ms. Rinzing Doma Bhutia, 2nd year MSc Nursing student, welcomed the dignitaries and participants.
Dr. Tessy Treesa Jose, Associate Dean, MCON, MAHE, Manipal, was the Chief Guest for the program. She highlighted the crucial role of nurses in ensuring patient safety and effective communication during emergencies. She appreciated the efforts of the students and faculty in organizing a relevant and practical educational program for staff nurses.
Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor and Head, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON, Manipal, emphasized the importance of developing technical skills and compassionate communication when handling critical situations in healthcare settings. She encouraged nurses to continuously update their knowledge and strengthen patient-centered care practices.
The academic sessions began with an informative session on “Safe Patient Transfer” delivered by the 2nd year MSc Nursing students, Ms. Sherap Palmu Wangchuk Bhutia and Mrs. Divya S. Shetty. The speakers discussed the principles of safe patient handling, proper transfer techniques, preventing patient injury, and maintaining patient comfort and dignity during transfer procedures.
The second session on “Airway Emergency and Ventilator Basics” was delivered by Dr. Sagar M.S, Department of Critical Care, KMC, Manipal. The session provided valuable insights into airway management, identification of airway emergencies, and basic ventilator concepts. The speaker elaborated on emergency interventions and essential nursing responsibilities while caring for critically ill patients requiring ventilatory support.
The third session on “Breaking Bad News to Families” was delivered by Dr. Radhika R. Pai, Assistant Professor-Senior Scale, Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal. The session focused on effective communication strategies, emotional sensitivity, and ethical considerations while communicating difficult information to patients’ families. The discussion emphasized empathy, active listening, and professional support during emotionally challenging situations.
The sessions were interactive and informative, providing participants with practical knowledge and skills relevant to clinical practice. A total of 20 staff nurses attended the program and actively participated in the discussions.
The program was coordinated by Mrs. Janet Prameela D’Souza, Assistant Professor - Senior Scale, and Dr. Soumya Christabel, Assistant Professor – Senior Scale, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal. Mr. Sonyog Maity, a 2nd-year MSc Nursing student, served as the Master of Ceremony for the program.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by participant feedback. Certificates were distributed to all participants.
This program contributed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education.
