Advanced Workshop on Mental Health System Readiness for ICD-11 Conducted at MAHE

The Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), MAHE, organized a two-day workshop titled “Advanced Workshop on Mental Health System Readiness for ICD-11: Bridging the Transition Gap to Improve Diagnostic Accuracy and Clinical Research Capacity” on June 8 and 9, 2026, at Manipal. The workshop supported Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening mental health services, building professional competencies, promoting innovation in healthcare systems, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. 

The workshop was conducted with financial support from the Department of Health Research (DHR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Government of India. A total of 60 delegates from various parts of Karnataka, including both in-station and outstation participants, attended the program.

The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in the diagnostic classification and coding of mental disorders using the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11). The program featured expert sessions and case-based discussions led by eminent psychiatrists from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

The resource persons included Dr. Samir Kumar Praharaj, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Manipal, who delivered sessions on the introduction to ICD-11 and schizophrenia spectrum disorders; Dr. Ravindra Munoli, Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Manipal, who discussed mood disorders; Dr. Suma T. Udupa, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Manipal, who addressed anxiety and OCD-related disorders; Dr. Rajeshkrishna P. Bhandary, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Manipal, who led the session on neurocognitive disorders; and Dr. Ashok, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Manipal, who conducted the session on substance use and addictive disorders.

Through interactive discussions and hands-on coding exercises, participants gained practical experience with ICD-11 implementation across clinical practice, education, and research. The workshop is expected to significantly strengthen readiness within the mental health system and improve diagnostic accuracy among healthcare professionals in Karnataka.
