September 26, 2025

On 11th September 2025, the Department of Community Health Nursing, in collaboration with the NSS Unit of MCON and 33 fifth-semester BSc Nursing students, organized an impactful awareness programme at Government Higher Primary School, Athradi. The initiative aimed to educate school children on essential first aid techniques and the pressing issue of climate change.

The event commenced with a warm welcome speech by Ms. Eva Vas, followed by an insightful address from Mr. Amol Powar, Assistant Lecturer at MCON. The programme featured engaging role plays, divided into subgroups, demonstrating first aid responses to various emergency situations such as drowning, snake bites, road accidents, and burns. A highlight of the event was the CPR demonstration on a manikin, skillfully conducted by Ms. Sanya Mathews, which captivated the students and emphasized the importance of timely intervention during cardiac emergencies.

To raise awareness about Climate change, a PowerPoint presentation was showcased alongside a Kannada-language video illustrating the causes and effects of Global warming. After each enactment, Mr. Amol Powar provided a summary in the local language, ensuring the children grasped the key messages effectively. The entire programme was coordinated by Ms. Sharon Vinola and Ms.Chaya Pujary, whose leadership ensured smooth execution and active participation.

To conclude, Ms. Reeshal Sequeira hosted a lively quiz competition based on the day’s activities. Winners were felicitated by Mrs. Saraswati, the school Principal, and Mrs. Surekha, Lecturer at MCON. In her closing remarks, Mrs. Saraswati expressed heartfelt gratitude to the MCON team, commending both students and faculty for their dedication and meaningful contribution.

A total of 61 students from 4th to 7th standard, along with 4 school teachers, attended the event. The students participated enthusiastically in all sessions, demonstrating keen interest and curiosity.

This programme not only enhanced the students’ understanding of emergency response but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation.

The initiative aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (quality Education), promoting health literacy and environmental awareness among young learners.
