Report on Medical and Eye Camp

Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, MCON Manipal, along with Lions Club of Moodubelle, organised a Mega Medical Camp in association with KMC Manipal and PHC Pernankila on Sunday, bringing quality healthcare services to the local community. The inaugural program began at 9:30 a.m. at Lions Seva Bhavana Moodubelle with a formal ceremony. The health camp was inaugurated by MJF. Ln. Dr. B.G.K. Acharya, District Chairperson for Women’s Medical Check-up, District 317C. He was joined by Ln. Laveena Barboza, President of Lions Club Moodubelle and faculty of the Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, MCON MAHE Manipal, Ln. Avani Patel, Secretary, Ln. Teresa Lobo, Treasurer, along with the doctors and staff from KMC, Primary Health Centre Pernankila, and Prasad Netralaya Udupi.

President Ln. Laveena Barboza welcomed the guests and participants. She emphasised that the purpose of organising a free health camp is to ensure the well-being of every individual in society and to create awareness about preventive healthcare.

The chief guest, MJF. Ln. Dr. B.G.K. Acharya spoke on the importance of regular medical check-ups, especially after the age of 40. He highlighted several real-life examples where negligence in early detection had serious consequences, stressing that preventive care can save lives.

Ln. Rev. Fr. George Thomas D’Souza, Parish Priest of Moodubelle, reminded the gathering that “Health is wealth.” He urged everyone to value life as a gift from God and take responsibility for maintaining their own health.

Ln. Valerian Noronha, Zone Chairman of Zone 3, Region 3 of district 317C, expressed his gratitude to the doctors and medical staff for their dedicated service. He encouraged all attendees to make full use of the opportunity provided by the Lions Club through this free Mega Medical Camp.

Following the formal program, the doctors and medical teams began consultations. Services included general health checkups, height, weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, ECG screening, cancer detection screening by Indian Cancer Society supported by ORACLE, and Gynaecological screening was done by Breast scan and Pap smear test.

For a general medical check-up, there were 92 participants, including 51 ECGs. Eye screening was conducted for 125 beneficiaries, of whom 16 patients were recommended for free cataract surgery. Others were advised to undergo a fundoscopy test and use spectacles. A total of 115 participants were screened for cancer detection, comprising 55 females and 60 males. Thirty-one females underwent a Pap smear test, and 25 had a breast scan. The camp was well-organised and witnessed an overwhelming response

from the community. All patients benefited from the initiative, receiving timely advice and check-ups. This contributed to SDG 3: Good health and well-being.
