Continuing Nursing Education Programme Report

A continuing nursing education programme was organized on the topic “IV line to Lifelines: Phlebitis, Interpretation of Arterial Blood Gas and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation” by the 2nd year MSc Nursing students of Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal on May 22, 2025, between 9 am to 12.30 pm. Dr. Suba Sooria Panchalingham, Head of Nursing Services, presented the inaugural address, emphasizing two critical dimensions of nursing practice: the importance of proper intravenous (IV) line care and the enduring significance of compassionate care. Dr. Suba emphasized that IV-line management is a fundamental clinical skill requiring precision, vigilance, and strict adherence to infection control protocols to ensure patient safety and quality care. Dr. Suba urged participants to be passionate learners, improve competencies, and show heroism through resuscitation skills like Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and précised Arterial Blood Gas interpretation.

Dr. Judith A. Noronha, Dean, Manipal College of Nursing, highlighted the challenges and adverse events associated with intravenous cannulation and highlighted the essential skills required for its safety practices. Dr. Judith encouraged participants to use mobile technology to access reliable, up-to-date health information, thereby enhancing the quality of care. Dr. Judith also reminded the audience that learning is a lifelong journey that must continue beyond formal education.

Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, shared her journey as a novice nurse and encouraged participants to pursue higher education to expand their career opportunities and enhance the quality of care..

Ms. Manisha Krishnaswamy, a second-year M.Sc. Nursing student deliberated on the session “ABG Interpretation”. This was followed by a session on “Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)” by Mr. Neten Wangchuk, a 2nd-year student of M.Sc. Nursing. The third session was conducted by Ms. Jimly Hazarika, a second-year M.Sc. Nursing on “Prevention and management of phlebitis”. All actively participated in the skill station with hands-on practice on ABG blood sampling, ABG interpretation, CPR for adults, and infants.

The sessions were interesting and inspiring, providing a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and the practice sessions in improving competencies. It garnered participation from a total of 36 participants, including staff nurses from KH, Manipal, students, and faculty members of Manipal College of Nursing. The program was coordinated by Mrs. Janet Alva D’Souza, Assistant Professor, and Mrs. Janet Prameela D’Souza, Assistant Professor-Senior Scale, from the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal.

This program has contributed to the achievement of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, & SDG 4: Quality Education
