Workshop on Calligraphy
March 08, 2026
The Manipal Institute of Communication organised a Calligraphy Workshop on 7th March 2026 at the MIC Auditorium with the objective of introducing students to the art of calligraphy and enhancing their appreciation for hand lettering and typographic aesthetics.
The workshop was conducted in two sessions to facilitate focused learning and active student participation.
The sessions were led by Shri Narayana Bhattathiri, a renowned calligrapher known for his expertise in traditional and contemporary calligraphic practices. Drawing from his rich experience, he introduced students to the fundamental principles of calligraphy, emphasising the importance of stroke control, rhythm, spacing, and the aesthetic structure of letterforms.
During the workshop, students were introduced to the basics of calligraphic writing and were guided through practical exercises to understand the formation of letters and the discipline involved in hand lettering. The resource person demonstrated various techniques and approaches that help in developing precision, balance, and visual harmony in written forms.
Participants actively engaged in hands-on practice sessions, experimenting with different strokes and lettering styles. The workshop encouraged students to explore the expressive potential of handwritten forms and to understand how calligraphy can contribute to visual communication, design, and creative media practices.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of patience, concentration, and consistent practice in mastering the craft of calligraphy. By stepping away from digital tools and engaging in manual lettering, students experienced the tactile and artistic aspects of creating letterforms.
The session was well received by students, who participated with enthusiasm and curiosity, making the workshop an interactive and productive learning experience.
Dr Shubha H. S., Director of MIC, felicitated Shri Narayana Bhattathiri by presenting a token of gratitude and conveying her sincere appreciation for sharing his expertise and inspiring the students through the workshop.
