On the occasion of International Stuttering Awareness Day 2016, the Department of Speech and Hearing (School of Allied Health Sciences) and School of Communication at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, jointly organized events to create awareness of stuttering with the theme of - Stuttering Pride – Respect, dignity, recognition.
The events organized include:
1. Collage, skit and just-a-minute competitions on 22 October 2016 for the students of School of Allied Health Sciences.
2. Street play on 24-October-2016 at Tiger Circle – KMC Arch for the general public
Ms. Angel Selvakumar (Department of Speech and Hearing) co-ordinated the events. Chief Guest Dr. B. Rajashekhar (Dean, School of Allied Health Sciences) spoke in tune with the theme i.e he urged those with stuttering to be proud of who they are and not allow the stuttering to limit them in any way.
The collage competition with the theme "A voice and a million things to say" saw an overwhelming response from the students with 18 teams participating. There was a tie for the first place. The winners were the group consisting of Nishitha, Pooja, Mariya and Jeena and the group consisting of Lara, Fazil, Tony and Megha. Students of the Dept. of Speech and Hearing enacted skits on the theme “Stuttering: A Social Stigma?” and actively took part in the Just-A-Minute competition. The winners of the skit competition were the students from II BASLP – Eva, Deepthy, Vani, Krittika, Smruthi, Shriya, Shireen and Daksha. The winner of the Just-A-Minute competition was Pooja (I-MASLP). Street play was performed at Tiger Circle on 24-October-2016 at 4:00pm by the students of II and III BASLP and it definitely had an impact on the general public.
