Overview

The Department of General Surgery is one of the key departments among clinical specialities. The department was started as a part of Kasturba Medical College in 1953. Post-graduation course in General Surgery first started in 1972. Over the years the department has evolved and has maintained pace with changing times and needs of the society.

Today, besides training undergraduates and postgraduates in General Surgery, the department is proud of performing state-of-the-art speciality clinical work including esophagogastric, pancreato-biliary, colorectal, breast, endocrine, head & neck  minimal access surgeries.

General Surgery is one of the fundamental medical specialities. It is the main trunk from which other sub-specialities branch out. A strong basic surgical knowledge is an essential prerequisite for any surgical sub-speciality. Over the years, General Surgeons are known for their flamboyant, dynamic adventurous nature and excellent leadership skills. The evolution of minimal access surgery over the past decade has further added significance to the general surgical department.
