The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Kasturba Hospital has played a significant role in the comprehensive treatment of all operative and non-operative paediatric surgical problems. The department has completed 25 years of its existence.

This department treats common problems such as hernias, hydroceles, pyloric stenosis, intussusceptions and urological problems. Uncommon problems including congenital anomalies and tumours of the head and neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis are also addressed.

The surgeons and the nurses in department are specially trained in the surgical care of infants and children. The department functions in conjunction with the Departments of Paediatrics and Neonatology to provide comprehensive care to the surgical neonate, infant and child. All surgical conditions in the children from birth are successfully managed using world class facilities.

The department is involved in teaching undergraduate medical students and postgraduates from the general surgery department. The department also runs a three-year residential postgraduate training in the speciality of paediatric surgery leading to the award of a MCh degree from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. The department also undertakes research in surgical problems of children.
