Overview
The Department of General Medicine is one of the key departments among clinical specialties. The Department was started as a part of Kasturba Medical College in 1963. The postgraduation course in general surgery first started in 1973. Over the years the department has evolved and has maintained pace with changing times and needs of the society. Today, besides training undergraduates and postgraduates in general medicine, the dept boasts of performing state of art specialty clinical work.

About the Area of Study
Medicine functions under 9 units and is one of the busy departments in KH with average 300-400 outpatients daily. With average daily 50 inpatients admission. Department caters to general medical problems & medical emergencies. Department is involved in teaching undergraduate medical students (MBBS) & Postgraduates. M.D (General Medicine) students. Undergraduate teaching involves lectures, beside clinics, grand rounds & student seminars. Postgraduate teaching involves general clinics, specialty clinics, subject seminars, Journal clubs & CPCs. Postgraduates are also posted in specialty clinics, subject seminars, journal clubs & CPCs. Postgraduates are also posted in specialties in the second year of residency on rotation to Radiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Medical Oncology, Chest medicine and Psychiatry. Postgraduates from psychiatry, Hospital pharmacy and Forensic Medicine are also posted in the medicine department in rotation. Guest lectures from renowned subject experts are also held regularly for benefit of postgraduates and faculty. In addition, the department is regularly conducting CMEs and Conferences. Department is actively involved in clinical research and clinical drug trial with Manipal Acunova. The department of medicine is to start the diabetes centre also.
