Students’ Major Projects for Experiential Learning at MIT
An Engineering graduate, on graduation, is expected to have a skillset to find solutions to problems of the society. Along with the domain specific knowledge, other basic skills that are expected are: Communication, Leadership, Teamwork, Problem Solving, Planning, Motivation and Enthusiasm, Adaptability, Flexibility, and Ability to Build Relationships. All these mandates engineering education to be experiential, practical, relevant, and up to date. Keeping this in mind, as an experiment, in 2007, Institute came up with the idea of Major Student Projects, wherein, institute provides infrastructure to build a technical project to compete in national & international competitions. Currently, there are 25 Major Student Project Teams operating in MIT campus.
All these teams are interdisciplinary in nature, having student representation from first to final year. In the process of getting into the team, and selecting the members to the team, students learn to face and conduct interviews. With the team size ranging from 25 to 50, students learn to work in group. By working under tight schedules, they learn to meet deadlines. By submitting Quarterly progress report, scheduling the task and by presenting budget required for the financial year, they hone their documentation, planning and presentation, skills. To generate the financial support, the teams need to sell their idea to possible sponsors. In the process, they learn the marketing, budgeting, and accounting skills. Thus, with this activity, we have taken the learning experience beyond the classroom.
Projects being innovative in nature, these activities have seen many publications and start-ups coming out of these ventures. Institution also envisages more scope for publication and IPs. To enable this, teams have added a research wing.

loopMIT
When Elon Musk came up with the concept of the Hyperloop, the idea called out to the creative minds at MIT to contribute towards revolutionizing transportation. LoopMIT comprises students belonging to various branches of engineering who are spread across the domains of Mechanical, Electronics and Electrical, Levitation and Propulsion, and management. Our team aims to build its own version of the Hyperloop technology, especially one that is particularly suited to the on-ground conditions and manufacturing feasibility in India.
LoopMIT is one of the top five hyperloop student teams that have represented India in the flagship hyperloop competition- The European Hyperloop Week (EHW) 2024. The team cleared all the documentation stages and qualified for demonstrating their design.
The second transcontinental event our team participated in 2023 was Hyperloop Global, earlier known as Canadian Hyperloop Conference. In this competition our designs successfully cruised through various stages, ultimately being selected amongst the 20 other participating teams worldwide.
Closer home, in April 2023, LoopMIT was also invited to be a part of the Global Hyperloop Conference hosted by IIT Madras as one of the five main hyperloop student teams in India.
The first prototype of our pod was completed in May 2023. The primary aim of the prototype built by the team in 2023-24 was to establish a robust foundation that could be worked upon and further improved in terms of both technology and cost effectiveness.
The 2024-25 prototype will take our team's work to the next stage and create a more intricate and efficient design for achieving faster speeds and a safer run of the pod. We are looking to incorporate the concept of Levitation and methods of contactless run in the next iteration along with Eddy Current Braking. The prototype will be made considering the scalability and economic feasibility for real-world applications.

INNOTECH MANIPAL
Owing to the recent pandemic that has led to lockdowns and restriction on outdoor activities, everything from food and medicine purchases to working 9 to 5 was done within the comfort of our homes. With innovations such as the simple blood glucose testing devices to a BPM tracker in our smart watches, we at Innotech Manipal came up with an idea of making more of these kind of innovative ideas into hands-on technology, with the central aim of making the technology cost-effective, DIY-based, compact, easy to assemble and use by everybody, irrespective of any skill boundary.
The cost of turning simple concepts into industry ready products would be enormous for the team to handle as it involves continuous trial and error of various components and materials and constant improvisation and research. With the help from Institute and MAHE, we are confident that our vision will be successful and would create room for advanced research and development. This experience at the undergraduate level for students would put them in a position to implement their daily curriculum into practice, further strengthening the skills and knowledge. Along with strong concepts, this opportunity will help students think at an industrial level of solving real-life scenarios, moulding them into industry-ready candidates as they journey through this project.
