BACKGROUND: Presently the incidence of obesity and their related commodities is increasing rapidly in India, especially among housewives. Home-making task being a major full time occupation of housewives, only limited time is available for them to participate in any exercise regimen or active leisure in order to maintain their body mass index. Due to urbanization and mechanization, energy expenditure in homemaking tasks has also decreased. The present study aims to find out the relationship between home-making performance mode and Body Mass Index (BMI) among housewives in Manipal ward, Udupi district. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Study participants were housewives of age group 30 – 45 years. The study was carried out in two sections: Firstly, home making questionnaire was developed by researchers as there were no culturally relevant questionnaire using a methodological study design. Secondly, using the tool, a cross-sectional study was carried out in 61 samples to find out the mode of performance of home-making task. Participants were inquired about the home-making tasks they performed on typical day, and their corresponding Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values were assigned by investigators from compendium of physical activities. (BMI) was calculated and classification of as recommended by WHO. CONCLUSION: There is a strong relationship between Home-making performance method and BMI.
