Start Date: September 15, 2023

End Date: September 16, 2022

The Department of Liberal Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (DLHS) hosted a two-day workshop titled ‘Audio-Visual Storytelling: Understanding Writing for the Screen’ on September 15, 2023, and September 16, 2023. The workshop featured esteemed filmmaker Nishantroy Bombarde as the resource person.

Nishantroy Bombarde is a National Award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter with experience as an Executive Producer on commercially successful and critically acclaimed films at Zee Studios including Sairat (2016). He has a strong sense of scripting and direction with three years of script-doctoring experience for Fox Studios. Nishant received the National Award for Best Debut Film of a Director for his critically acclaimed film Daaravtha (2015).

The first day of the workshop delved into the fundamental aspects of screenwriting. Nishantroy introduced the participants to the three-act structure of scripts while emphasizing the importance of creating a well-structured narrative. He demonstrated how this structure was applied in various successful films and analyzed several excerpts to illustrate character development and setting in films.

The second day was equally insightful, with a focus on dissecting the intricacies of movie introductions and conclusions. Nishantroy Bombarde used scripts from renowned films like Finding Nemo (2003), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), and The Matrix (1999) to explain how these elements are crafted to engage and captivate the audience. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the art of storytelling through visual and auditory mediums.

The highlight of the workshop was the practical session where participants, under the guidance of the resource person, collectively wrote a full movie script. This hands-on exercise allowed participants to apply the concepts learned during the workshop and gain valuable experience in screenwriting. It was a collaborative effort that showcased the talent and creativity of the cohort.
