Overview
The Department of Microbiology at Melaka Manipal Medical College offers a study program for the second year medical students in order to educate and upgrade their knowledge and skills in infectious diseases and immunology that are essential for the practice of medicine.
This course aims to prepare medical students to:
- Understand the process of disease causation by infectious agents and appreciate the role of microbiology laboratory in the diagnosis and control of these diseases. Special emphasis is laid on addressing diseases endemic in Malaysia
- Understand the development of immune response, its role in infection and other diseases with emphasis on host-pathogen interactions
- Appraise the problems of microbial drug resistance and its implications
- Apply principles of asepsis and infection control
Several fun-filled student learning activities are conducted by the department annually where their creative skills as well as knowledge are potentiated. “Microfest’ is one such important event comprising an inter collegiate south zone district/state level microbiology quiz competition -“Probe” and an institutional level microbiology creative activity “Model your microbe”.
The department encourages its faculties and students to engage in collaborative research and the students’ learning is enhanced through various guest lectures, problem-based learning, case-based learning and self-directed learning activities incorporated in their course curriculum. The department has also organized a national level conference “FIMBE 2017” which involved an amalgamation of both medical education and health science practices.
