Department of Psychiatry
Established in 1974, the Department of Psychiatry at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal has expanded in strength and scope in keeping with the increasing patient load and the importance attached to psychiatry as an integral part of total health care. The department offers MCI recognized postgraduate courses—MD and DPM (Diploma in Psychological Medicine) since 1985 and M.Phil. in Psychiatric Social Work since 2005—and integrates outpatient and inpatient clinical care, an active referral and rehabilitation service catering to patients from Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and beyond, research, and multidisciplinary academic training, supported by a faculty of psychiatrists and specialists in behavioral sciences committed to a humanistic and ethical practice of psychiatry.
Highlights
- Involved in the clinical training of interns, MD (Medicine) residents, DM (Neurology) residents, MD (Pharmacology) residents, MPhil Clinical Psychology students, BSc & MSc Nursing students, and BOT & MOT students, with faculty also guiding/co-guiding several PhD scholars in areas related to mental health.
- Receives patients referred from out of State for its rehabilitation services.
- Clinical activities at both outpatient and inpatient levels, catering to patients from a wide catchment area in Karnataka, Kerala, and Goa, along with an active referral service from within the hospital and the outreach programs of Kasturba Hospital.
- Aims to provide care to patients in a wide variety of contexts, ensure maximum clinical exposure to postgraduate students, and facilitate research.
