The Department of Nephrology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, under Manipal Academy of Higher Education, is a recognised teaching centre for DM Nephrology and one of the earliest established nephrology centres in the region. It serves as a tertiary-care referral facility for coastal and interior Karnataka, North Kerala, and Goa, integrating clinical services, teaching, and clinical research. Supported by the attached 2,000-bed Kasturba Hospital, the department provides the full spectrum of clinical nephrology and emphasises bedside teaching, practical skills, and supervised research in a congenial, team-based atmosphere.

  • Provides comprehensive nephrology care including critical-care nephrology, acute kidney injury, CKD, and kidney transplantation (live, deceased, and ABO-incompatible).
  • Performs the full range of nephrology procedures, including kidney biopsies, temporary and tunnelled central venous catheterization, haemodialysis, CRRT, plasmapheresis, hemoperfusion, and peritoneal dialysis (acute and CAPD).
  • Recently broadened its scope with dedicated Palliative Care Nephrology and Paediatric Nephrology services.
  • Runs regular teaching programs — bedside clinics, journal clubs, seminars, clinical and mortality audits, nephropathology reviews — and hosts CMEs with national and international faculty.
  • Handles national and international grant-funded research (BIRAC, ICMR, Griffith University, Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society), including work on an indigenous dialysis cartridge and urinary NGAL as an early AKI biomarker.

Clinical and Consultation Services

The department runs a dedicated daily OPD and ward equipped with an acute room and mechanical ventilator, and provides nephrology consultation for hospitals attached to KMC Manipal.
