Scope of the Program:

Health care is one of the fastest growing industries in our country in the present scenario. New hospital projects are coming across the country and several existing ones are expanding their services. Several corporate houses are also venturing into hospital industry. Complexities in the running of the Hospital management have made it one of the challenging and sought after course.

A graduate in Masters in Hospital Administration (MHA) has job opportunities in varied fields apart from the healthcare sector alone. Large numbers of consultancy groups recruit MHA graduates for their consultancy work.  Graduates specialized in MHA get into health insurance organizations and third party administrators’ (TPA) organizations. With the government focused on making health more affordable and trying to reduce out-of-pocket payment to a large extent, multiple health insurance companies and TPA’s have opened up and reaching out to the population.  

Many of the IT firms also recruit students qualified in the MHA for their hospital information system projects. Today several state governments and corporate hospital bodies prefer to appoint graduates in Hospital Administration for running of the hospitals even at the district level setting.

Rising competition among various healthcare groups, more demanding patients, legal hurdles, medical tourism, and consumerism in health care has made the profession of hospital administration highly demanding.

The course provides the basic and advanced knowledge in healthcare delivery system, its complexities and the role of healthcare institutions. Classroom and practical training provided by qualified & experienced faculty. The course is for a period of 24 months structured in 4 semesters. Admissions open for Health Sciences Graduates and other Graduates. Practical training in hospitals attached to the Manipal Group Hospitals. Future international collaborations envisaged.

 

Course Structure:

The total duration of course is for 2 years structured into 4 semesters of 25 credit hours each. The fourth semester will be research/project based. 

 

Teaching and Learning Methods

 

The pattern of teaching in general involves a pedagogical approach expecting students to take initiative in search of knowledge, thereby making them think on issues beyond the theoretical framework and encouraging them to develop their own abilities & skills to tackle various real life problems. Classroom learning is mainly discussions and interactive sessions involving case studies & theoretical inputs, simulations, exercises, individual and group presentations in the form of seminars and short projects etc.

MHA graduates are either campus interviewed or are quickly absorbed by the industry as there is large need and deficiency in the output. Placements include: 1.Corporate hospitals; 2.private sector hospitals; 3. Trust based healthcare organizations; 4. Hospital consultancy firms; 5. Health insurance organizations; 6. IT industry involved in developing software for hospitals/healthcare etc.

Admissions

ELIGIBILITY

CITIZENSHIP: Indian nationals can apply under the General Category. Foreign nationals or Non Resident Indians or Indian nationals supported by NRI relatives can apply under the Foreign/NRI Category.

QUALIFICATION: The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS/BNYS/BPT/BSc Nursing (Basic or Post Basic)/BPharm/BSc in Allied Health Sciences/Bachelor degree in Arts/ Commerce/Science/Law from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.

ADMISSIONS:

GENERAL CATEGORY: Admissions are done on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination and interview. There is no entrance test. 

FOREIGN/NRI CATEGORY: Admissions are done on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

Candidates can apply either under General Category or Foreign/ NRI Category. Those submitting applications under both General and Foreign/ NRI category will be considered only under the General Category. Change of category at a later stage will not be entertained under any circumstances.


INTERVIEW


Based on the marks obtained at the qualifying examination, Manipal University will declare a shortlist of applicants eligible for interview on 27.06.2014. The number of candidates included in the shortlist will be more than the total number of seats available. Mere inclusion in the shortlist does not guarantee admission. Shortlisted candidates should attend the interview on 04.07.2014. These candidates will be informed separately. The candidates called for interview must bring all the original and photocopy of their documents.

MERIT LIST

GENERAL CATEGORY: Based on the marks obtained at the qualifying examination & Interview, Manipal University will declare a list of candidates in the order of merit after the interview.

FOREIGN/NRI CATEGORY: A separate merit list of the applicants under the Foreign/NRI category will be prepared based on marks obtained at the qualifying examination and those selected for admission will be informed separately.
