Dr. Ramesh Bhonde was associated with National Centre for Cell Science Pune, since its inception and subsequently joined Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore as Technical Director; later he moved to Stempeutics Research Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He has been working in the field of pancreatic regeneration in diabetes for the past twenty years. He received Ph.D in Zoology from Pune University. His areas of interest and expertise include Animal Tissue Culture, tissue banking and engineering with special reference to the cultivation of fastidious cells such as hepatocytes, vascular endothelial cells, islets of Langerhans, Organ cultures of skin, trachea, fallopian tube, placenta and cornea for virological studies. He has extensively worked on in vitro generation of islets from pancreatic and non-pancreatic sources of stem cells. He has shown that multiple injections of unfractionated bone marrow reverse experimental diabetes in mice. He is a recognized guide for Ph.D in Zoology and Biotechnology of Pune University, Devi Ahilya University, Indore and Manipal University, Manipal. He has guided more than 15 Ph.D students who are currently placed either as postdoctoral fellows or having faculty positions abroad. He has more than 140 publications in peer reviewed indexed journals and 4 book chapters.
