The curriculum is an integrated programme of lectures, tutorials, clinical attachments and project work.   The teachers' role is more to facilitate active enquiry and learning rather than passive absorption of information. Problem solving, problem based/ oriented and self directed learning exercises are emphasised.


PHASE I CURRICULUM SUMMARY


The Phase I curriculum, carried out in Manipal, India, is conducted in two stages, namely, Stage I and Stage II with the latter being sub-divided into Stage IIA and Stage  IIB.


Course regulations

Student evaluation includes continuous assessment in the form of class tests and block examinations  including  theory  and  practical  components,  and  a  final  University examination which determines the students' promotion to Stage IIA.

  • A student's progress in the Phase I curriculum will be monitored by periodic theory and practical assessments / attendance/ participation in PBLS/ seminars/ tutorials. The progress  (block) examinations shall comprise restricted response essays, multiple-choice questions and practical examination.
  • The final examination at the end of each of the stages I and II shall consist of restricted  response  essay,  multiple  choice  questions,  oral  examinations  and practical examinations (Objective Structured Practical Examination).   The student should score a minimum of 50 per cent in the theory component and a minimum of 50 per cent in the practical component of each subject to be declared successful.   A student who fails in one or more subjects (theory or/and practical) will be required to re-appear in the failed subjects. (both theory and practical)
  • Eligibility for appearing for university examination is 90 per cent attendance.
  • A student will be permitted a maximum of 8 academic years to complete the MBBS course and not more than 4 academic years to complete Phase I in Manipal.
  • A student who does not pass a subject in 3 chances will be required to withdraw from the programme. A 'chance' will also include those situations when a student does not appear for the exam or a student is detained for lack of attendance.
  • Students who fail in one or more subjects in Phase I Stage I will not be allowed to proceed to Phase I Stage IIA.
  • Students who fail in one or more subjects in Phase I Stage IIA will not be allowed to proceed to Phase I Stage IIB. (Clinical Phase)
  • Students who do not pass the exit examination at the end of semester 5 will not be allowed to proceed to Phase II.
  • Viva voce will be conducted for borderline students and to confirm distinction.
