DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL EDUCATION

The Department of Medical Education of K.M.C., Manipal was established in 1985 to bring about improvements in medical education and health care.

THE OBJECTIVES
1. To give health professionals an in-service training for their role as teachers.
2. To provide opportunities for those faculty members who are interested in medical education.
3. To enable residents (postgraduate students) to face their academic challenges.
4. To develop learning skills in students.

FORMAT & CONTENT
The method used for attaining these objectives is the workshop format in which there is enough scope for involvement by the participants. About 35 participants take part in a workshop.

The duration and topics of the various workshops are as follows :

A. Teaching-Learning Workshop (Duration: 5 days)
This workshop exposes the participants to the :
* conditions that foster learning.
* lecture method and other methods of instruction.
* optimal use of blackboard, overhead-projector and slides.
* principles of lesson – planning.
* method of conducting a small-group teaching session.
* practice teaching sessions.
* concept of teacher as a classroom leader.

B. Student Evaluation Workshop (Duration: 4 days)
This workshop exposes the participants to the :
* use of evaluation to promote learning.
* guidelines for setting and evaluating essay questions.
* guidelines for setting and evaluating objective questions.
* objective structured practical & clinical examination.
* guidelines for setting a question paper.

C. Postgraduate Orientation Workshop (Duration : 1 day)
This tells the participants how to :
* write a dissertation.
* use a library.
* read better.
* review a journal article.
* use the common audio-visual aids.

D. Learning Skills Workshop (Duration : 1 day)
This tells the student how to learn from :
* lectures (includes effective note-taking and note making).
* practicals.
* tutorials.
* books (includes effective reading skills).
* peers.

E. Public Speaking Course (Duration : 8 hrs. in 4 days)
The participants are told how to :
* Prepare and give effective speeches.
* Give the welcome address.
* Introduce the chief guest.
* Function as a master of ceremonies.
* Deliver different types of speeches.
* Propose the vote of thanks.

F. Human Resource Development Programme (Duration : 3 days)
This programme provides experiential learning exercises in
* Self discovery and Self esteem.
* Leader effectiveness.
* Human relations.
* Effective communication.
* Self and Group Appraisal.
* Desired behavioural changes.

G. Scientific Presentation (Duration : 3 sessions each of 2 hrs. duration)
This gives guidelines for
* Preparation of protocol of research.
* Funding the Research agencies.
* Presenting the results as manuscript/oral/poster presentation.

H. Challenges of Classroom Teaching (Duration : One session of 2-3 hrs. duration on each of the following topics)
This is meant for those who have already participated in the Teaching-Learning and Student Evaluation Workshop.
The participants will be exposed to :
* Innovations in lecturing.
* Non-lecture strategies.
* Problem-Based Learning.

This department extends help in preparation of learning resources- handouts, slide-tape programme, audio-tapes, video and slides. The department circulates Excerpts from Medical Literature.

PROGRAMMES ON THE ANVIL
How can Heads of Departments -
* Promote excellence in teaching.
* Promote research.

THE FACULTY
The faculty members of the Medical Education Department consist of the Head of the Department and other part-time teachers. The part-time teachers have their full-time responsibilities in their parent departments. They devote their time and energy purely on a voluntary basis for the cause of medical education. The Medical Education Department is open to any faculty member who is trained or involved or interested in any aspect of medical education. Anyone is welcome to attend the department meetings every Saturday from 3.30 to 5.00 pm in the Department of Medical Education.

CONSULTANCY
The department helps other medical and professional colleges in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu to conduct Faculty Development Programmes.

ROLE IN EXAMINATION REFORM
The department also helps in the statistical analysis of the questions and in the building up of a Question Bank.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

• The department maintains a database of the research article publications of faculty members of Manipal University.
• The department assists all the institutions under MAHE for the selection of teachers for Good Teacher Award.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE FOR THE WORKSHOPS
No financial support is available for travel, accommodation or food. However, assistance will be given to provide suitable accommodation if a request is made in advance.
