The Department of Forensic Medicine is situated on the second floor of the main college building, located at Hampankatta, Light House Hill Road, Mangalore. It is spread over an area measuring 1400 sq. m approximately. The department is currently providing training in subject specialty of Forensic Medicine for the undergraduate students of III, IV and V semesters of II MBBS degree classes. The department has modern amenities with well planned and furnished faculty rooms and office, equipped with computers, laptops for all the faculty and Wi-Fi internet facility, non-teaching staff rooms, departmental research room, an outstandingly organised museum, full time operational staff library and a huge student laboratory, a spacious demo room and seminar room with OHP, LCD projectors and audio-visual systems which can comfortably seat about 100 students.

The department provides 24 hours non-stop medico legal autopsy services for the public, in a well equipped and maintained separate mortuary block, complete with modern equipment and instruments. The mortuary block has the capacity to undertake two cases at a time. It is located at the Government District Head Quarters Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore, measuring approximately 365 sq. m. The morgue is provided with a cold chamber amenity for preserving 12 dead bodies at a time. Autopsy work load under taken by the faculty and technical staff members of the department range from nearly 600 – 800 cases annually.

The department also functions as the office of the State Medico Legal Centre, with Professor and Head of the Department, assigned as the Hon. State Medico Legal Expert to the Govt. of Karnataka under taking medico legal cases for the expert opinion, referred from the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Coorg and Chikmangalore districts of Karnataka.

The department also has a tie up with a professional body - National Foundation of Clinical Forensic Medicine (NFCFM), with Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine serving as the President and the department serving as the Head Office of NFCFM since June 2008. The department has already organised four academic programmes on behalf of NFCFM, comprising of two CME programmes, a student forum and a national conference during the year 2009 since January till date. With the help of NFCFM department is planning to conduct more such events.
