About the department

The department of Otorhinolaryngology -Head & Neck Surgery has two units stationed in KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore and District Government Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore. The faculty comprises of two Professors, one Additional Professor, three Associate Professors and two Assistant Professors.

Clinical Activity

The department runs 6 Out Patient Clinics per week in KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore and
District Government Wenlock Hospital. The Out Patient Clinics are equipped with microscopes, ENG machine, endoscopes, endovision cameras, fiberoptic scopes and Stroboscope for detailed evaluation of deafness, vertigo, sinonasal disorders, swallowing and voice. We also regularly conduct camps at schools, MRPL, IOCL and surrounding rural areas (26 camps/ month).

Patient care:

The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, apart from routine Otolaryngological surgeries, regularly performs major head and neck surgeries, micro-ear surgeries, micro-laryngeal surgeries and cochlear implants.

The Cochlear Implant Programme has derived excellent results and has provided hearing solutions to many patients. This programme is supported by a dedicated Audiology, Speech and Language Pathology department with the best facilities available.

Laryngectomies, conservative laryngeal surgeries, thyroplasties, neck dissections, thyroidectomies, parotidectomies and gastric pull ups are done routinely. Pediatric airway disorders are managed routinely. Skull base surgeries including temporal bone resections and trans-nasal endoscopic skull base surgeries form a part of the surgical repertoire. Treatment of diseases like allergic rhinitis and vertigo, with the help of Yoga, is also practiced in our centre.

A good number of faciomaxillary traumas, septo-rhinoplasties are performed. Tympanoplasties, Ossiculoplasties, facial nerve decompressions and Stapedectomies also form a part of the department’s surgical repertoire. Endoscopic surgeries like FESS, CSF leak repair and endoscopic DCR are performed routinely.

Both the affiliated hospitals have a well-equipped operation theatre with state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary Carl Zeiss operating microscopes, Carl Storz endoscopes with Endo-vision cameras, microdebrider, along with other facilities.
