Management Development Programme For Health Care Assistants(9-11 April 2010)
Introduction: In our country, there is no dearth of resources, whether material or human. What is essentially lacking is effective management. Professionals in Health Care Services need to develop managerial skills to prepare themselves for the major structural and organizational changes that are taking place in the present globalised market. In this context, Manipal Institute of Management in association with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Bangalore conducted a Management Development Programme for Healthcare Assistants at KMC, Mangalore during 9-11 April 2010.
The main
objective of this programme was to provide an understanding of management concepts & techniques to the participants.
Mr. Ganesh Selvaraj DGM-HR, MEMG, Bangalore; Mr. Nishith Mohanthy Senior VP- HR, MEMG, Bangalore; Dr. Schidananda, IIM Bangalore; Prof. Vijay Rego, Visiting Professor, TAPMI,Manipal; Dr. AP Achar MIM , Manipal; D.r AH Sequera, professor NITK, Mangalore were the key resource persons who took sessions on different management topics Viz., Interpersonal relation & conflict Management, Group Dynamics – experiential learning, Operations Management in Hospital, Total Quality Management in hospital, Introduction to Marketing Management, Customer relationship Management in hospitals, Factors contributing the success of an enterprise, Marital Management/inventory Management, Planning and managing financial resource.
There were 21 participants out of which 17 were females and 4 were males from healthcare background. They expressed their willingness to participate in similar type of programmes in the future.
One Day Workshop on Total Quality Management for Compettive Advantage (7 May 2010)
Quality revolution has happened in 1990s and quality continues to find a strategic focus across the sectors. In the advent of liberalized business environment quality has emerged as one the fundamental aspects to remain competitive. Experts are of the opinion that we are not into ‘management of quality’ but we are fast moving towards into ‘quality of management’ era. That means right from organizational design to change and control quality orientation has to happen. The focus is on ‘process management approach.’ All these dimensions would be applicable across the sectors. In this context, Manipal Institute of Management in association with SIDBI, conducted a one-day workshop on ‘Total Quality Management for competitive advantage’ on 7 May, 2010 at Manipal Institute of Management.
The objectives of the programme were :
• To develop understanding about quality as a strategic and organization-wide concept
• To enable participants to understand the process management approach
• To appreciate world class manufacturing practices
• To appreciate human resource aspects of quality management

Participants
Participants were owners, managers and executives of different organizations. There were 35 participants, out of which, 25 were males and 10 were females.
Certificate Course in Management of SMEs(July 5 to Aug 28, 2010)
Introduction
Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) play a very important role in the Development of Indian economy. It contributes nearly 40% of GDP and employ about half the labor force of the country. With the ongoing liberalization and globalization of the Indian Economy, SMEs would be facing an increasing competition from the Global markets. Today's global market expects reasonably priced, high quality products delivered on time. Hence, there is need to provide managerial training to the employees as well as potential manager of Small and Medium Enterprises. In this context, Manipal Institute of Management in association with Small Industries Development Bank of India organized eight weeks special training programme to develop young graduates as Professional Managers for Small and Medium Enterprises from 5 July to 28 August, 2010.
Inaugural Function:
The inaugural function of this programme held at MIM on 5 July 2010. Dr. T Prasad, Professor at National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai and Mr. Sudhir Bhurde, General Manager of SIDBI, Bangalore were the chief guests of the function. Dr. GK Prabhu, Registrar of Manipal University was the Guest of Honour.
In inaugural address, Dr. T Prasad highlighted the importance of making higher education practical and productive. Otherwise, it will produce only unemployed / underemployed youth in the country, he strongly said advocated the introduction of an entrepreneurship course in the curriculum of higher education to make the students self-reliant and self-confident.
Valedictory function:
Valedictory of function of this 8 weeks training programme conducted on 28th August 2010. Dr. Saji Gopinath, Director – TAPMI, Manipal was the Chief Guest and Mr. Vatsa Kumar, Assitant General Manager of SIDBI, Bangalore was the Guest of Honour.
Participants and outcome:
30 young participants from various background attended and completed the course. About 30% of the participants expressed their willingness to become Entrepreneurs and start their own business in a small way. On behalf of SIDBI, Mr. Vatsa Kumar agreed to finance these youngsters to start their business. Ms. Veena Shetty, speaking on behalf of the participants said that in a short span of time, they were introduced to entrepreneurship in every form. All participants expressed their happiness about the successful conduction of the programme.

Entrepreneurship Motivation Programme For Women In Family Business – April 24 and 25, 2009.
Entrepreneurship development among women is one activity that promises encouraging results. It may be possible to bring about beneficial results in the development of a region by motivating, training and assisting women towards independent business ventures. In this context, Centre for Small Business Management of MIM with the collaboration of SIDBI organised a two-day “Entrepreneurship Motivation Programme for Women in Family Business” on April 24 and 25, 2009 at Manipal Institute of Management.
The main objective of the programme was to motivate women to take active part in their family business and help in the growth and expansion of the business. The programme contents were: Entrepreneuring; Motivation for Entrepreneuring; Entrepreneurial competencies; Business opportunities identification; Business plan; Financing options; Steps in creating a new enterprise.
Mr Sujir Prabhakar, DGM & Zonal Manager of Syndicate Bank, Udupi and Dr. A.P. Achar were key resource persons. 18 women from the region of Udupi and Kundapur with different business background, participated.
Management Development Programme On Jewellery Enterprise Management – June 14 to 21, 2009.
Artisan dependent Jewellery business in India had an unbroken heritage of over 5,000 years and remained a traditional art work. The scenario has, however, changed in recent years owing to the international brands being marketed by countries like China, Indonesia, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai compelling the domestic producers to switch over to modern means of production and professional management of jewellery enterprises.
The need to manage the entrepreneurial Jewellery enterprises more effectively in the present era is more than ever before. In this context, Manipal Institute of Management (MIM), in association with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) organized a Management Development Programmes on Jewellery Enterprise Management on two Sundays.
The MDP provided concepts and skills necessary, not only for managing the existing business but also for initiating, establishing, expanding, and diversifying the business. The objectives of the programme were: To orient the owners of Jewellery enterprises about new trends in jewellery enterprise management; Suggest various measures to withstand the global competition; Update the practical knowledge of the owners on jewellery enterprises about the functional areas of management.
Owners of jewellery enterprises with experience of 5 - 25 years participated in this programme.
Leadership development programme for women entrepreneurs, women in family business – October 29 and 30, 2009.
Leaders are needed at all levels of organization and success of organization mainly depends on the quality of leadership. To harness the potential of women entrepreneurs and women in family business, MIM in association with SIDBI organized a “Leadership Development Programme for women entrepreneurs, women in family business”.
The two-day Leadership Development Programme conducted on October 29 and 30, 2009 provided opportunities for the participants to develop their leadership skills so that they can become more effective in the various activities they are involved in.
Programme contents were: Self discovery and development, How to build and maintain high performance work team, project report preparation, strategies for new enterprise creation.
The resource persons were Dr. Anuradha, TAPMI, Manipal, Mr. Amaranath Hegde, Director RUDSET Institute, and Dr. AP Achar, MIM.
‘Gramotsav’ - 27th and 28th of March, 2010.
Manipal Institute of Management in collaboration with Small Industries Development Board of India (SIDBI), organized ‘Gramotsav’ – A Rural Trade Fair on the 27th and 28th of March, 2010, at Ravindra Mantap, MGM College Campus, Udupi.
‘Gramotsav’ was a gateway to rural artisans to the urban consumers or corporates in and around Udupi, thus giving an opportunity to exhibit their skills through their products and also market their products. It helped in building the confidence levels of the rural people as they got a platform to sell their innovative rural products to urban consumers. The trade fair was designed with an objective of providing a market and market linkage support to rural artisans, rural entrepreneurs and craft SHGs.
‘Gramotsav’ was inaugurated by Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj, Promoter of Coronet Fish Products, on March 27, 2010 at 10:00 am. The guest of honour was Mr. Sudhir D Burde, General Manager - Small Industries Development Bank of India, Bangalore and the function was presided over by Dr. Pushpa Kini, Director, Student Affairs Manipal University. Dr. KVM Varambally delivered welcome address. Mr. Raveendra Rao and Mrs Smitha Nayak were the Programme coordinators.
