The growing energy demand globally is an eye opener especially for the developing countries. The solution lies in increased dependence on renewable resources rather than fossil fuel, which is bound to run out one day. In this direction Manipal University has yet again acted locally by taking a few simple measures like:

a) Upgradation of air-conditioning system

It includes replacement of old air-conditioning units with power efficient water cooled screw chillers, cooling tower upgrades, unitary air-conditioner controls, implementation of building automation system, with sensors installed in entire building for efficient cooling, automatic switching ON/OFF based on occupancy and fixed time schedule, use of R -138 gas system (environment friendly).

b) Solar Water heaters

Since the coastal belt of Karnataka is blessed with bright and sunny days almost throughout the year excepting the monsoon season, solar energy is in abundance and can be captured to meet our heating needs.
