On 27 October 2026, seventh-semester B.Sc. Nursing students of MCON, together with the Department of Community Health Nursing and the NSS Unit of MCON, conducted a hand hygiene awareness program across seven health centres in Udupi district. The program aimed to strengthen hand hygiene practices among nurses and other health workers and promote safer patient care.
Students explained how proper hand hygiene helps prevent the spread of microorganisms and healthcare-associated infections. They demonstrated the six steps of handwashing and highlighted the recommended duration of 40–60 seconds when washing with soap and water. Nurses, ASHA workers and other health workers were encouraged to practice the technique and apply it consistently during patient care.
Under the guidance of Dr. Vinish V, NSS Program Officer and Assistant Professor at MCON, the program was held at the Primary Health Centres in Manipal, Hirebettu, Hiriyadkka and Pernankila, and the Community Health Centres in Kota, Shirva and Brahmavar.
The activity reinforced the role of hand hygiene in infection prevention and patient safety. It also supported SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being through health promotion and SDG 4: Quality Education through practical learning and awareness.
