Southern Illinois University
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale is home to more than 13,000 undergraduate students and more than 4,600 graduate students from all 50 states in the United States, and from more than 100 countries worldwide. Despite its size, more than 80 percent of the university’s undergraduate class sections have fewer than 30 students, and its student-faculty ratio of less than 16-to-1 gives students the opportunity to thrive in an intimate, supportive environment. The Carnegie Foundation classifies SIU as a high-research-activity university, and ranks our university as among the top 4 percent of higher education institutions for research in the United States. U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2014” ranks SIU in the top-tier category of “Top Public Universities: National Universities,” and SIU has been named one of the “Best Midwestern Colleges” by the Princeton Review. SIU’s 8,474-acre campus, established in 1869, is located in the rural Southern Illinois city of Carbondale, just 84 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. The community, with its 26,000 residents, is nestled on the fringe of the 280,000-acre Shawnee National Forest, the only national forest in Illinois.
Research in the SIU’s College of Engineering focuses on innovation and discovery, and the college offers the following degrees for undergraduates:
- Civil Engineering
- Civil Engineering with a Specialization in Environmental Engineering

SIU endeavors to maintain a safe, healthy and productive environment for the entire campus community. Safety education and resources are available online at safe.siu.edu for students and employees. As of the fall 2014 semester, there are 355 students from India who are pursuing higher education at SIU – the biggest international student population at the university. In addition, the Indian Students Association at SIU provides “a homely atmosphere for the students and families of India.” Details about the registered student organization and its activities, including its “Diwali Night” and “Indian Night” events, can be found online at http://isa.rso.siu.edu.
Articulations with the Civil Engineering program show that most of the students from the ICAS program of Manipal Academy of Higher Education need to complete 65 to 68 credit hours at SIU, which can be completed in two years.
