Integrated MA-PhD Program

The five-year full-time Integrated MA-PhD Program has a strong focus on original contemporary research in the humanities.

Students admitted to the MA program have the option of continuing for a PhD degree at the Centre. The degree will be awarded by Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

All students cannot automatically be accepted for the PhD program. For those students who are allowed to opt for the PhD program, their academic work will extend without discontinuation.

The requisites for continuing onto the PhD program are:

1. The student should have consistently performed well through all semesters.

    

2. The student should have shown motivation and commitment to research in the first two years of the program.

    

3. The student should have secured a B plus or above for the MA thesis.

    

4. The MA thesis will be the preliminary PhD thesis proposal and thus will be related to the doctoral thesis topic. It should cover a minimum literature survey.

    

5. The student shall then formulate a PhD proposal as per the university rules.

    

6. The fees for the MA and the integrated PhD course are as described in the university website. All relevant University guidelines for doctoral research will apply.

    

7. There will be a limited number of assistantships and scholarships available.

    

8. The decision of the faculty will be final.

    

9. The student will have three years (full time) after the submission of the proposal to complete the PhD .

    

10. A student can decide on leaving the program after two years of registering for an Integrated MA-PhD Program, and will be awarded a MA degree if she fulfils all requirements.

     

PhD Program

The three-year full-time PhD Program has a strong focus on original contemporary research in the humanities.

Once admitted to the PhD Program, a Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) is formed for each student, consisting of a guide, a chair and other specialist faculty members. Within two months of joining, a proposal has to be presented before the DAC. Once passed, this proposal has to be passed by the Manipal Academy of Higher EducationResearch Committee within a maximum time of six months. Following this, the student will be considered as registered for the PhD program.

Every six months, the PhD candidate has to submit a report to the DAC. Failing this, the scholarship is likely to be withheld.

The doctoral thesis is expected to be ready for submission at the end of three years. In a few cases, this period may be extended by 6 months after due clearance by the University.

In order to apply for an extension, candidates will have to submit a chapterisation and draft of their thesis (of at least 50,000 words) to their DAC.  The extension is not assured and will be sanctioned by a university committee on recommendation from the DAC.

No further funding will be given beyond this six-month period and candidates are strongly advised to complete their dissertation within the allotted time.

All PhD students are full time members of the MCH academic community. They are expected to be in the MCH premises on all working days, if they are not on a sanctioned field or academic visit.

All PhD students are regarded as working part-time at the MCH. This means that they will function as Teaching Assistants (TA), organise events such as conferences and workshops, and take up administrative duties. Leave rules for Manipal Academy of Higher Education employees apply for all doctoral students.

MCH Facilities

Library: The Manipal Humanities Library is housed within the Centre. Other than an excellent collection of books, the library also has a digital component with access to online journals and packages like JSTOR.

Printers: Students can print assignments in the library during working hours for a nominal charge. Documents other than assignments cannot be printed in the library.

Internet Access: Students can access internet in the computer labs and designated access points through the Manipal Intranet. There is Wi-Fi access throughout much of the MCH.

Student Lockers: Use of the lockers is a privilege given to the students. A limited number of lockers are available to registered students and are issued in the order of the applications received.

MCH Café: Our pantry is equipped with a sophisticated brewing machine that freshly grounds roasted coffee beans at the press of a button to serve hot cappuccino or espresso. Tea drinkers have several varieties of tea bags to choose from. Non-caffeinated beverages include soup, hot chocolate, badam- pista milk, Bournvita and Horlicks. The cost for each of these beverages is displayed in the Café.

Plagiarism

The MCH takes a very strong stand on plagiarism. If there is substantial plagiarism, the student runs the risk of expulsion from the University.

If found guilty of negligent plagiarism, students will minimally lose an entire grade from their semester grade (for instance, if a student had a B- grade, post proven plagiarism, she will get a C- grade).

• Duration: 5 years
• Citizenship:Indian nationals can apply under the General Category. Indian nationals supported by NRI relatives, foreign nationals and Non-Resident Indians (NRI) can apply under the Foreign/NRI Category.
• Qualification: Student should first be admitted to the MA course aT MCPH and should maintain the required eligibility GPA.There is no minimum age.

Admissions

General Category/Foreign/NRI Category: Admissions are done on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination (bachelor’s or master’s degree, whatever is applicable).

Manipal Academy of Higher Education will declare a shortlist of candidates based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination (bachelor’s degree). In the case of General Category students, the merit list will be published on the university website in the month of June. There is a separate merit list for the Foreign/NRI students, who will be informed by the University.

Candidates who make it to the merit list will be called for an interview. On the day of the interview, these candidates are required to bring the original and photocopy of their documents, including their curriculum vitae (CV) and a 1500 word statement of purpose which must indicate the student’s interest in pursuing the respective course.

Note: Candidates can apply either under General Category or Foreign/NRI Category. Those submitting applications under both General and Foreign/NRI Categories will be considered only under the General Category. Change of category at a later stage will not be entertained under any circumstances.

Entrance Test Pattern

There is no Entrance Test for this course.

Interview: Based on the marks obtained at the qualifying examination, Manipal Academy of Higher Education will declare a shortlist of candidates in the website. These candidates will be informed individually. Candidates called for interview must bring all the original and photocopy of their documents.
