Current Academic Role & Responsibilities
Involved in teaching Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnolgy for undergraduate and post graduate students. Research Interest: Metal toxicity, Environmental toxicology, Nutritional Biochemistry. After obtaining MSc in Medical Biochemistry from Kasturba Medical College. Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Manipal, Completed Ph.D from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore under Rajiv Gandhi University Health Sciences (RGUHS) in the field of toxic metal lead. As a fonder member of the “National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning Prevention in India (NRCLPPI) (St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences), involved in the evaluation of lead (Pb2+) exposure in children and adults in India using 3010B lead analyzer. Currently working as Professor and Head of Department of Radiation Biology and Toxicology at Manipal School of Life Sciences, MAHE, Manipal. The research field of interest is study on toxic metal lead and its effects. Various population based and animal model studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of lead on health. Studies related the role of essential trace minerals on the absorption of heavy metals with special reference to lead Consultancy: Metal Analysis from Biological (blood, serum, urine, tissue) Environmental (water, soil, rock, sludge, plant material) Pharmaceutical (drugs, branded and unbranded medicines), Archaeological (shell, tusk, coral, tooth, bone) and food samples
Following metals can be analysed: Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, U, V, Zn Ongoing Research: Cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in variations to toxic effects of lead in occupationally exposed workers Evaluation of prenatal and early postnatal lead (Pb2+) exposure on cognitive functions and identifying associated metabolomic markers and mtDNA mutation signature
Evaluation of the effect of toxic metals and the ameliorative effects of phytochemicals/bioactive compound Research Interest: Metal toxicity, Gene polymorphism, Nutritional Biochemistry, After obtaining MSc in Medical Biochemistry from Kasturba Medical College.
