The Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology at Kasturba Medical College,MAHE, is a three-year postgraduate program regulated by the National Medical Commission. Established in the late 1950s, the department offers comprehensive training through structured academics, high-volume clinical exposure, and hands-on microsurgical practice.

You train in a tertiary eye care centre with advanced diagnostics, wetlab microsurgery, and multiple subspecialty services, supported by continuous faculty mentorship that prepares you for ethical, independent ophthalmic practice.

Program Highlights

Legacy of Excellence: Training is delivered by a department with over six decades of experience in ophthalmic education and clinical care.

Advanced Cataract Services: Access to a micro phacoemulsification platform, including the Centurion Vision System, supported by IOL Master diagnostics for precision cataract surgery.

Advanced Retina Care: Training on the Constellation Vitrectomy platform for vitreoretinal surgery, screening of preterm babies, and advanced retinal diagnostics including Zeiss fundus camera and OCT angiography.

Innovative Glaucoma Care: One of the earliest centres in India to perform the Kahook Dual Blade microincision glaucoma procedure, supported by HFA and Goldmann field analysers and ultrasound biomicroscopy.

Subspecialty Exposure: Paediatric ophthalmology, squint, uveitis, neuro ophthalmology, oculoplasty, and refractive services.

Experienced Faculty All our faculty members are fellowship trained with extensive subspecialty expertise.

Lab Work

gain hands-on experience in ophthalmic diagnostics and surgery, including phacoemulsification, glaucoma, retina, cornea, paediatric ophthalmology, and advanced imaging within a tertiary eye care centre.

Research Projects

participate in faculty guided clinical research across ophthalmic subspecialties, supported by microsurgical wetlab training and a mandatory postgraduate dissertation.

Clinical Training

undertake structured inhouse rotations across clinics, operation theatres, eye bank services, and outreach camps, preparing for independent practice, fellowships, and academic careers in ophthalmology.

Program Eligibility

Qualification

You must have successfully completed an MBBS degree from an institution or university recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI).

You must also:

Complete your compulsory internship on or before the date specified by the NMC.
Hold a Permanent Registration Certificate for the MBBS qualification issued by the NMC, the erstwhile MCI, or a State Medical Council.

For candidates with foreign medical qualifications:

You must be a registered medical practitioner in the country where you obtained your medical degree.
You must obtain a temporary registration certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
If you are an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have obtained your primary medical qualification outside India, you must qualify the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) (Screening Test) as per the Screening Test Regulations, 2002, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

Continuation of Scholarship

The award of Fee Waiver for the subsequent years will be the same as given at the time of admission in the first year. Scholarship will be extended in the subsequent year only to those students who have cleared all subjects in the University Examinations of previous year before the due date for payment of annual program fee. Students who are promoted to next year with failures (F) / Incomplete (I) / Detention (DT) grades, will NOT be eligible for fee waiver for that academic year. Fee Waiver will be forfeited in the instances of irregularity in attendance, proven charges of indiscipline, bringing disrepute to the Department / Institution / University etc.

Withdrawal Policy

In case the candidate leaves the course before the course completion (for any reason), he / she MUST reimburse the total program fee (as per Prospectus 2025) for the years of scholarship utilized, back to MAHE Manipal.
