Train for Specialist Practice in Radiation Oncology and Comprehensive Cancer Care

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Radiation Oncology at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), MAHE, is a three-year postgraduate program regulated by the National Medical Commission. Established in 1974, the department has offered postgraduate training since 1978 and is equipped with advanced radiotherapy technology.

You train in a high-volume tertiary cancer care setting with comprehensive exposure to radiation therapy, systemic treatment, and multidisciplinary oncology practice, developing the clinical and technical competence required for independent specialist roles in radiation oncology.

Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) with on-board cone beam CT

Image-guided brachytherapy

Deep Inspiratory Breath Hold (DIBH) techniques

Comprehensive Oncology Practice: Integrated use of concurrent, adjuvant, and palliative chemotherapy for solid tumours.

Strong Multidisciplinary Environment: Close collaboration with Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Palliative Medicine, Radiobiology, and Nuclear Medicine.

Clinical Training

Gain hands-on experience in advanced radiotherapy planning and delivery, including VMAT/IMRT, SRS, SBRT, IGRT with cone beam CT, DIBH techniques, and image guided HDR brachytherapy across intracavitary, interstitial, intraluminal, and surface mold applications within a tertiary cancer care centre.

Research Projects

Participate in department led clinical and academic research projects in radiation oncology, radiobiology, and combined modality cancer treatment, with involvement in treatment planning studies, protocol development, multidisciplinary tumour boards, and a mandatory postgraduate dissertation.

Specialised Skills

Undertake structured inhouse clinical rotations across radiotherapy, medical oncology, surgical oncology, palliative care, and allied oncology services, managing approximately 1,500 patients annually and building readiness for post MD fellowships or superspecialisation pathways in oncology.

Program Eligibility

You must have successfully completed an MBBS degree from an institution or university recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI).

You must also:

Complete your compulsory internship on or before the date specified by the NMC.
Hold a Permanent Registration Certificate for the MBBS qualification issued by the NMC, the erstwhile MCI, or a State Medical Council.

For candidates with foreign medical qualifications:

You must be a registered medical practitioner in the country where you obtained your medical degree.
You must obtain a temporary registration certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
If you are an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have obtained your primary medical qualification outside India, you must qualify the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) (Screening Test) as per the Screening Test Regulations, 2002, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

Continuation of Scholarship

The award of Fee Waiver for the subsequent years will be the same as given at the time of admission in the first year. Scholarship will be extended in the subsequent year only to those students who have cleared all subjects in the University Examinations of previous year before the due date for payment of annual program fee. Students who are promoted to next year with failures (F) / Incomplete (I) / Detention (DT) grades, will NOT be eligible for fee waiver for that academic year. Fee Waiver will be forfeited in the instances of irregularity in attendance, proven charges of indiscipline, bringing disrepute to the Department / Institution / University etc.

Withdrawal Policy

In case the candidate leaves the course before the course completion (for any reason), he / she MUST reimburse the total program fee (as per Prospectus 2025) for the years of scholarship utilized, back to MAHE Manipal.
