Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Established in 1955, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, is a multi-specialty department providing high-quality patient care across antenatal care, postnatal welfare, infertility, oncology, and urogynaecology. The department combines first-rate clinical services with an updated academic curriculum and advanced research, with a vision to establish a centre of excellence for women's reproductive health, train the next generation of specialists, and expand research. It provides complete obstetrical care, comprehensive family welfare, infertility management, prenatal diagnosis, cancer treatment, endoscopic surgery, menopause management, and pelvic floor medicine, and reconstructive surgery.
Highlights
- Manages high-risk pregnancies and offers prenatal diagnosis with ultrasonography, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling.
- Treats all gynaecological cancers through radical surgery, radiotherapy, and/or chemotherapy, with dedicated clinics for oncology, urogynaecology, high-risk pregnancy, and ultrasound.
- Developed Fetal Medicine as a subspecialty with dedicated fellowships, with Gynaecological Oncology fellowships in the pipeline, and an integrated clinic for women with pelvic floor disorders.
- Accommodates 21 postgraduates every year, supported by progressively expanded clinical, research, and academic infrastructure.
- Leads a multicentric international implementation research project, PRESCRIP-TEC (Prevention and Screening Innovation Project Toward Elimination of Cervical Cancer), supported by an H2020-DBT grant with the India component of approximately ₹5 crore, with MAHE as the lead institute across India.
- Runs community programs including anaemia prevention, pulse polio, save-the-girl-child, adolescent and school health, and Rural Maternal and Child Welfare (RMCW) satellite centres, and collaborates with Maastricht and Utrecht Universities for student electives.
