Dr. H S Ballal’s journey reflects vision, perseverance, and lifelong dedication to education and healthcare, ensuring that MAHE continues to advance as a globally respected center of academic excellence.
Legacy of Leadership
Dr. H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), has played a defining role in shaping the institution into a premier global university. He served as the 4th Vice Chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE)
His connection began in 1953, when, as a school student, he participated in Dr. T. M. A. Pai’s pioneering efforts to establish Kasturba Medical College (KMC). A renowned radiologist and dedicated academician, Dr. Ballal began his teaching career as a lecturer at KMC Mangalore and went on to become its Dean in 2001. His leadership has contributed significantly to MAHE’s evolution as a globally recognised university, including its distinction as the first private university in India to enter the Top 100 of the BRICS University Rankings.
His influence extends beyond MAHE through leadership roles with FICCI, Assam University, Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) and other prominent organisations. His contributions to education and leadership have been recognised through honours including the IBM Inspiring Vice Chancellor of the Year Award, Education Personality of the Year Award, Aryabhata International Award (2010) and Vocational Excellence Award (2009).
A Vision for Future-Ready Education
At the heart of Dr. Ballal’s philosophy is the belief that education must continuously evolve to remain relevant to a changing world. A passionate teacher himself, he has championed innovative teaching methodologies, faculty development and an academic culture that places knowledge creation alongside knowledge dissemination.
He spearheaded the Manipal Centre for Professional & Personal Development, strengthening opportunities for faculty and students to develop the capabilities needed in an increasingly dynamic global environment. His commitment to teaching is also reflected in his co-authorship of Peeping Inside the Human Body, a handbook designed for radiology students. Through his leadership, he continues to advocate an education that goes beyond qualifications to develop curiosity, adaptability and lifelong learning.
Beyond Academics
Dr. Ballal’s energy extends well beyond academic and administrative leadership. A university-level tennis player during his college years, he has remained an enthusiastic sportsman and a strong believer in active living. He is also a Life Member of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Indian Medical Association, Mangalore.
Even after decades of service, Dr. Ballal continues to teach, mentor and inspire, embodying the values that have shaped Manipal’s educational legacy. His lifelong association with the institution—from participating in its early beginnings to helping guide its growth into a globally recognised university—reflects an enduring conviction: education is not merely a profession, but a lifelong mission.
