AREAS OF INTEREST, EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH

Area of Interest

Bioprocess Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Downstream Processes, and Enzyme Technology.

Area of Expertise

Dr. Subbalaxmi S, has expertise in the production of industrially important metabolites such as enzymes and bioactive compounds using submerged, semi-solid, and solid-state fermentations. She has sound knowledge of Industrial Microbiology, and Bioprocess Engineering, which is very much required to execute the bioprocess-related research projects. She has in-depth knowledge of and hands-on work experience on statistical optimization tools like MINITAB, Design Expert, JMP, and on development of mathematical models using MATLAB, operating variety of instruments in lab including solid-state fermenter, packed bed reactor, fluidized bed reactor, etc. During her Ph.D. at MAHE-Manipal, she has gained the expertize in designing the experiments to produce enzyme tannase, analyzing results using software MINITAB, and scaling up of fermentation process. She has designed the packed bed bioreactor, for the production of tannase with inert support polyurethane foam and tannin rich substrate Triphala using two bacterial isolates Bacillus gottheilii M2S2 and Bacillus cereus M1GT. The idea of fabrication of packed bed bioreactor, enhanced the 12-fold increase in the production of industrially important tannase enzyme. She has substantiated her accomplishment in peer reviewed research publication in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, Waste and Biomass valorization, South African Journal of Chemical engineering, 3-Biotech, Arabian Journal of Chemistry, Bioresource Technology Reports, etc.
