The Respiratory Therapy programme was started in September 1995, under the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive care at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. The course, a Bachelor's degree programme (BRTT) was designed on the similar lines of the respiratory therapy programme being offered at The College Of Allied Health Professionals, Loma Linda University, California, U.S.A. The course curriculum was tailor made to suit the Indian medical system. 

BSc RT is a four year degree program which includes 3 years student period and 1year internship. Till date fifteen batches of students have passed out from our institution and are currently successfully working in many places in India and abroad. MSc RT is a two year program with two specialties. Adult respiratory Care and Paediatric and neonatal Respiratory care. Till date two batches have passed out and is working in India.

The current faculty strength of our department is twelve, which includes four full-time faculties and eight part-time faculties. The course is being taught by various experienced faculty from different streams of medical sciences including Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Neonatology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Nephrology, Pulmonology and General Medicine.
