Why CAMP ?

The enormous explosion of knowledge and expansion of the communication domain of the 21st century demands greater transmission speed and larger band-width without cross-talks which is beyond what electronics can provide. Photonics, hence, is the alternate technology for the future. This branch of science investigates and utilizes the capability of photon to carry information and energy. The research activities going on all over the word in the field of photonics have reaped fascinating achievements over the last few decades. The optical fibres are already ubiquitous with the internet cables. The world will soon witness photonics extending its arms beyond communication and taking care of computing and control as well. What with the fast-paced studies going on, photonic switches and optical computers will soon replace the present electronic components.

Photonics encompasses the emerging sciences of quantum information, opto-atomics, polaritonics, biophotonics etc. The applications of this branch of science are unlimited ranging over light detection, telecommunication, information processing, spectroscopy, holography, medicine, material processing, agriculture, robotics etc. The most significant application of Photonics, though, is in ‘smart lighting’ and energy harvesting. Photonics technology for renewable energy generation as well as for energy conservation in lighting and communication has the potential to contribute significantly to lowering the emission of greenhouse gases and thus saving the planet.

CAMP provides students a unique and extensive exposure to a variety of core and research areas in photonics and approaches through its teaching program and state of the art academic and research laboratories.
