The drug and poison information centre of the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal University, is located in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and services are offered since 2001. The drug information centre is approved by the Australian Society of Hospital Pharmacists and is intended to be utilised as a source of selected, comprehensive drug information for physicians to allow them to evaluate and compare drugs besides catering to the information needs of nursing staff. The Drug Information Center (DIC) is used as a resource by pharmacists in their daily practice to provide the best possible care with regard to the rational use of drugs for their patients/ clients. The centre includes an array of specialists and experts like pharmacologists, clinical pharmacists, toxicologists and other pharmacists. The staff of the drug information centre also takes an active role in the education of patients and health professionals within the institution. The centre has access to MICROMEDEX, Iowa Drug Information Database (IDIS), Medline and online drug and medical references.
The Poison Information Center serves the patients and physicians of Karnataka, South India by providing accessible poison and medication-related emergency treatment advice, referral assistance and comprehensive information on poisons and toxins, poison prevention and the safe and proper use of medications.
Most frequent type of enquiries is reported to involve information on therapeutic use, dosage, product identification, drug interactions and ADRs.
