The department of Anatomy of our prestigious institution Kasturba Medical College is one of the best and most well equipped in Asia. The department, in action since 1953 when first batch of MBBS was inducted, has been the pride of our college and has grown from strength to strength. With the turning of century and advances in technology, the anatomy department has lived upto its reputation by providing latest state of the art teaching aids to medical students. The department boasts of a fully air-conditioned and spacious dissection hall which can accommodate more than 250 students. It is well maintained to keep it clean and hygienic for the faculty and students. Being a student from Nepal, the environment in the Anatomy department has never let me realize that I am away from my land. Moreover, I am truly satisfied with the decision I have made to select Manipal University, Department of anatomy for perceiving my postgraduate studies.
Department of Anatomy is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research. Well qualified teaching staff who have always made anatomy interesting and make us accept that “Seeing is Believing”. The department is equipped with an air conditioned spacious dissection hall, well-resourced histology lab, advanced research facility, a departmental library apart from the central library, a seminar hall and enough facilities for self-study. The anatomy museum is regarded as one of the largest with informative specimens.
Our post graduate academics allow us to take part in anatomy demonstration which gives us variable experience in the field of teaching as well. Interaction among the teaching staff along with the seniors from the department has always been a plus point in which they have always shared their experiences and knowledge with us. Nevertheless, every faculty has encouraged us to participate in CME and conferences. The non-teaching staffs are cooperative and helpful.
With all the guidance, I am sure that after our post graduate studies we all will be a pioneer in our field with all the guidance we get from the faculty.

The science of learning the present, through past for a healthy future is the evergreen subject – Anatomy. Anatomy is not a dead science, instead it is an ever living subject in the field of medicine which forms the basis of medical education. Anatomy, I believe is an example which very well describes the statement – Nothing is Immortal. Anatomy can be understood and learnt by gaining hands on experience on cadavers through dissections. Cadavers are no less than a blessing for the medical professionals which help them in understanding the human body better. Department of Anatomy, here at Manipal serves this purpose very well. We have well equipped histology and research labs which are a boon for the budding scientists. The histology lab is provided with recent technology such as microtomes and various other equipments which can be used for sectioning of various tissues. Using these sections the slides of various tissues are prepared for the study of microscopic structure of an organ. Along with the gross study of an organ it is necessary for the doctors to know its basic microscopic structure which can be useful in the diagnosis of any pathology. The dissection hall is amazingly constructed keeping in mind the requirements and needs of students. Its quiet large to accommodate approximately, more than 300 students at a time. Sufficient cadavers are provided for the students for their learning. To avoid overcrowding of the students and to ensure that each student is given equal attention, the students are divided into batchs. Each batch consists of a certain number of students and one cadaver is allotted for each batch. Well organized and regular lecture classes are conducted and the topic which was covered in lecture class is demonstrated in the dissection hall on the very same day. This gives the students a clear idea of Anatomy. Demonstration classes for osteology, radiology ,surface anatomy and embryology are conducted every week. This forms an overall basis about the subject for the young doctors which can be beneficial for them in near future. The department has recently launched a new research lab which is well equipped with recent technology and techniques. Many students are carrying out their research work and their thesis work here. The department also has a tie up with the Manipal Life Sciences Centre which is mutually beneficial for both the departments in conducting enormous research in the field of medicine. The Anatomy museum here at Manipal, bags first place in being one of its kind. Each specimen at the museum is created bearing in mind even the minute details which need to be understood. This museum signifies the effort and dedication of all the people who have worked to create something which is really fascinating. Another fascinating and, the wonderful thing to be looked up for at Department of Anatomy, Manipal are the staff of this Department. Dedicated, talented and enthusiasts yet charming and friendly are the adjectives which can be used aptly for describing all the staff of Anatomy. Many projects are being headed by the staff of Anatomy department. Few of them are guiding many students in carrying out their PhD work. Staff here provide a platform for the students to express their views and encourage them to storm their brains and grow up as good researchers. Maintaining the same enthusiasm in teaching and giving their best with each passing year marks the dedication of the staff. Oceans of knowledge with an urge to teach and curiosity to learn something new is the quality of our teachers. It’s definitely a bliss to be a part of this esteemed institute and to be under the guidance of such eminent and well experienced teachers.
Anatomy is very deep to be explained in words, it can only be learnt .Live it to learn it.

My association with the department of Skin and STD has been since the year 2000, when I joined as a postgraduate in dermatology. The experience of learning from Dr. C. Balachandran and Dr. S.D. Shenoi was very fruitful, following which I was absorbed as a faculty member in the Skin department and was working there as Associate Professor till Nov 2009.
Working with the senior faculty members which were my teachers and yet independently was very enriching. The guidance and support given to me by the department can never be forgotten. I was always encouraged by my teachers to perform better and this has helped me become a better clinician.
I shall always cherish my experience at KMC Manipal and the pleasant memories of the Skin department shall remain with me for life. Long live Skin dept KMC, long live Manipal.

The college definitely is more than an academic abode. The myriad of guest lectures, clinical exposure and extracurricular activities makes for one of the best curriculums in the country. With amazing infrastructure and a dedicated faculty, KMC Manipal has stood beyond my expectations. This is where lives are nurtured.

I haven’t regretted my decision about getting into Manipal University even once since the day I came here for my counseling. I have always wanted to become a doctor and what more could be better than studying in the top ranking college of India. We have been given opportunities in so many fields here and it definitely brings out the best in us. Above all, what I like the most is that everything here is organised, may it be lecture schedules, exams or college fests, sports events. Everything is run so smoothly that we students have nothing to worry about other than our studies. I think this is the best I could have ever asked for.
Vani Krishana Gupta
"On the first day after my arrival, I was certain I would go back home and never return to Manipal. Everything was quite foreign and new to me, having just left the comforts of home. However, within days, the people I met made me feel more at home, and the staff we encountered were quite supportive and helpful, understanding. Soon, we became so wrapped up in the swing of everyday life in our new-found home, that homesickness barely had a moment to creep in! From an academic stand point, the training received at Manipal was excellent and prepared us for real-life situations, and the standard of teaching kept improving year after year. Manipal itself is a beautiful, self-contained city, where everything was within walking distance and if not, autos were pleasantly at hand, making transportation an issue that never arose. The lush, green environment and the landscape made studying in Manipal a heavenly experience. Overall, in retrospect, few of the most important years of my life were moulded while studying at Manipal, giving me not just an academic degree, but also several life lessons whose morals I still carry to this day."

We could like to express our great thanks to KMC for hosting our elective posting. We feel privileged to have spent our posting in such a well respected Indian Medical School and in a variety of the hospital departments. The departments we have spent time in being Paediatrics, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Casualty, Trauma and Orthopaedics. Our time in KMC has passed by very quickly and we would like to thank all of the staff for their help during our posting. We will recommend elective postings at KMC to our contemporaries at Southhampton University and hope that in time others from our university will consider coming to KMC.
