Achievements of faculty
• Dr. Satish Adiga, Professor in Clinical Embryology at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal has bagged the best research award 2011-12 by the Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), Department of IT, BT, Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka, for his recent publication in an international journal. Dr. Adiga has been working in the area of in-vitro fertilization popularly known as test tube baby technology and his research interest is focused to diagnose the defects in sperm, eggs and embryos and to increase the chances of conception in infertile couples.
• Dr Narendra Chaudhary, Senior Resident, Department of Pediatrics, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal was awarded the Best Poster Prize at the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) Annual Congress-2011 held in Auckland, New Zealand in October 2011 for his paper titled 'Significance of Interleukin- 6 and C-Reactive Protein in Febrile Neutropenia in Children and Young Adults with Febrile Neutropenia during Chemotherapy for Cancer’.
• Dr. Benjamin Joseph, Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of Paediatric Orthopaedic Service was invited to serve as the Visiting Professor to the Universities of Cincinnati and California - San Diego in April 2011. This is the first time in the history of both these centres that an Indian has been invited to serve as Visiting Professor. At Cincinnati the Professorship was at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for the Aaron W. Perlman Hip Day. The Lectures were titled “What have I learned about Perthes’ disease? – A 30-year journey” and “Decision-making in the treatment of Perthes’ disease”. In addition, he gave two more lectures and had an interactive teaching session with the Residents. At San Diego, the Professorship was at the Rady Children’s Hospital.

• Dr. Guruprasad Kalthur, Associate Professor, Clinical Embryology, Dpt. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, KMC, Manipal has received prestigious CREST (Cutting-edge Research Enhancement and Training Technology) by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. He will be visiting National University of Singapore, Singapore, to conduct advanced research on telomerase activity in oocytes and early embryos for six months.
• Dr P Sripathi Rao, Dean, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and Professor of Orthopaedics has been awarded the prestigious Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) by Royal College of Surgeons, London, U.K. He received the degree at a presentation ceremony in London on July 5, 2011. This degree has been conferred on Dr Rao in recognition of his contribution of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Rao is a pioneer in the field of arthroscopic surgery in India and has served as the secretary and president of Indian Arthroscopy Society and President of Karnataka Orthopaedic Association.
• Dr Murlidhar V Pai, MD, Professor and Unit Head, ObGyn, at KMC, Manipal has been given the status of National Faculty by Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecological Society of India (FOGSI) in 2011.
• Dr. Kavitha Saravu, Associate Professor in Medicine was one of the 10 Indian doctors in the China-India Joint Medical Mission to commemorate the Dr. Kotnis medical mission in China. This coincided with the Prime Minister’s visit to China recently.
• Dr. Shrutakirthi D. Shenoi, Professor, Dermatology, was the recipient of the prestigious Dr. J N Shetty Memorial Oration Award during CUTICON, Karnataka 2011 held at Mandya on 8,9 October 2011.
• Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Associate Professor, Dermatology, has been awarded Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship 2011, by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK.
• Dr. M. Sethukumar Kamath, Additional Professor & Head , Dept of Ayurveda has received the “Best Citizens of India Award” by International Publishing House during April 2010.
• Dr. Krishna Jayacharya Malagi, Associate Professor , Dept of Ayurveda, was awarded ‘AYURVEDA BHUSHANA – 2005’ by the International Academy of Ayurveda physicians (SHB Gandhinagar, Jamnagar) in SDM Ayurveda college Hassan on 27th Oct 2007 during Panchakarma Terminology Workshop. This award was given for his Tremendous Contributions to the Development of Ayurveda. Also he was awarded ‘JIVAKA AYURVEDA VISHWA SANMAN’ for the excellence in his field by International Academy of Indian Medicine Affiliated and Recognized by Kavi Kuluguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, Ramtek, Dt. Nagpur (Govt Maharashtra), Higher and Technical Education Dept,Govt of Maharashtra, Mumbai, India.
• Dr. Satish Kumar Adiga, Professor, Clinical Embryology, has received Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship for foreign researchers -2002; The American Cancer Society Fellowship-2001; UICC- International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowship-2000; Dr TMA Pai Gold Medal for excellence in Medical Research -2000,2002.
• Dr. Guruprasad Kaltur, Associate Professor, Clinical Embryology, has received CREST fellowship from DBT, Govt. of India- 2011; Dr. TMA Pai Gold medal for excellence in Medical Research for the year 2009; BOYSCAST fellowship from DST, Govt. of India- 2009; UICC-ICRETT fellowship to have advanced training in Australia 2006; Young Scientist award by Indian Association of Hyperthermic Oncology and Medicine, 2003, India.
• Dr. C Balachandran was the president of IADVL KT Branch in the year 2005 and is the Founder President of Karavali Dermatology Society (KDS) 2000. Dr. C Balachandran also has the following Orations to his name - Prof KC Kandhari Oration Award , AIIMS, New Delhi, September 11, 2009 & Shiv Kumar Oration Award in IADVL KT Branch conference, Mangalore.
• Dr. K. L. Bairy, Professor, Pharmacology, has been awarded Dr.T. M. A .Pai Gold medal for excellence in Medical Research for the year 1987 in Kasturba Medical College. He has also received Practitioner’s gold medal for standing first in Physiology in the Karnataka University Examination held in December, 1976.
• Dr. Kumar M.R Bhat, Associate Professor, Anatomy, is the recipient of US Patent – US2008/0299563 A1: Microtubule associated protein-2 promoter – as useful diagnostic, prognostic tool in 1) Neruo-degenerative disorders 2) Small molecule screening 3) as a marker for neuronal differentiation.
• Seven members of the faculty in the department of OBG have been honoured with the FOGSI awards.
• Dr. Manjunath A, Dr. Shyamala G,Dr Satish Adiga, Dr. Rajesh Bhaktha have been awarded various International fellowships.
