Children are the future of the nation and caring for them becomes the responsibility of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. The department comprises of 4 units - 3 general paediatric units and neonatal unit. In addition, it has a good liaison with the paediatric department at Dr. T M A Pai Hospital, Udupi and Dr T M A Pai Rotary Hospital, Karkala where residents do their community posting. The department has carved a niche for itself by being compassionate, paying attention to details, updating and using the latest developments in the field and empowering the parents with the child’s illness, so much so that difficult cases from other medical colleges are referred to the department. In addition to diagnosing and treating serious and complicated illnesses and encompassing the various sub specialities of paediatrics, it has increased the number of preventive and rehabilitative services offered.

The good support from the specialities of Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, ENT, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Dermatology and Oncology and Pedodontia ensures that the child who comes to the department gets the best. In addition there is 24 hour laboratory support (NABL certified), 100 % voluntary blood transfusion services with facilities for component therapy.

• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) The NICU is a 15 bedded unit, with over 600 admissions a year. At least 20% of these infants require ventilator support. Approximately 40% of the admissions are exutero transfers.
