The Department was started in 1984 with a view to provide holistic medical care to the patients in Kasturba Hospital, along with promoting scientific research in Indian Traditional Medicine – Ayurveda. The main aims of the department are:

  1. Foster better understanding and collaboration between the experts of Allopathic and Ayurveda Medicine – thereby initiating scientific research in Ayurveda Medicine, to bring to the light the useful practice and drugs of the system, enriching our medical care.
  2. Provide cheap, effective, natural and native medical care to the deserving patients.
  3. Enrich the heritage of Indian Medicine by periodically conducting seminars, panel discussions, training courses etc.

The main functions of the department:

  1. Patient care and consultation.
  2. Research.
  3. Teaching and training for interested doctors /health workers.

The department runs an OPD on all working days, where an average of 12-13 patients are consulted for their complaints, every day. In-patient services are also provided whenever needed. Patients are admitted in I.P.D. for following reasons:

  1. If the patient is acutely ill or bed ridden.
  2. For investigations or observation.
  3. For special procedure.
  4. For research purpose.

  • Disturbed sleep
  • Headaches/Migraine
  • Depression and anxiety disorders
  • Obesity
  • Digestive disturbances
  • Chronic pains
  • Sexual disturbances
  • Menstrual and menopausal problems

2. Heart/circulatory disturbances

  • High blood pressure
  • IHD
  • Angina

3. Allergies and Asthma

4. Rheumatic disorders

5. Auto-immune disorders

6. Geriatric problems

7. Skin diseases

8. Ano-rectal problems like piles, fissures and fistula

9. Minor ailments of children

10. Urogenital problems (B.P.H., U.T.I., Urinary stones etc.)

Ksharasootra treatment for fistula-in-ano and piles is one of the well accepted and scientifically studied procedures, available in the department. A well equipped Ksharasootra theatre (photo 1) is functioning, attached to the department. More than 300 cases of fistula and 500 cases of piles are treated so far succesfully.

Panchakarma is another unique mode of Ayurvedic therapy, which has both curative and preventive aspects. The department has a well equipped Panchakarma Research unit (Photo 2, 3, 4) where following procedures are carried out regularly both for patients and healthy individuals.

O.P.D.Timings: 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. & 2.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Panchakarma therapies: 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. & 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.
