Research Lab

Newly established research laboratory is well equipped with all amenities required for tissue culture, e.g. Bio-safety hood, CO2 Incubator, inverted trinocular microscope, centrifuge, electrophoretic apparatus, minus 20⁰C refrigerator etc. It is also well equipped with instruments essential for tissue processing, sectioning and staining. Other noteworthy appliance includes pH meter. This laboratory enables collaborative research with other departments especially in the areas of genetics and molecular biology.

Dissection hall

The 925 sq mt. clean and brightly-lit, fully air-conditioned hall ensures adequate space for more than 300 students all at once. The hall is equipped with LCD and video recording facilities. Live demonstration of dissection procedure is possible through such amenities. The excellent cadaver preservation facilities include 2 cold chambers which can accommodate around 50 cadavers. Formalin tanks for cadaver preservation and wash area is also available. Moreover, well preserved specimens of all parts of the human body are easily available to the students. The teaching-learning process is enhanced by normal X-ray, MRI, CT scan images and embryology models. The individual bones and articulated skeletons are also made accessible to the students during working hours. The dissection hall is well equipped with anthropometric instruments, X-ray view boxes and instruments essential for preparation of anatomical specimens, e.g. band saw, circular saw, brain knife etc. The dissection hall also has a mini library ensuring the ready availability of reference books for students and faculty.

Histology Laboratory

The department has a fully equipped, air-conditioned histology unit spread over an area of 200 sq.mt. which can accommodate 150 students at a time. Students are provided with individual microscopes and slides during routine practical classes and a binocular microscope with CCTV attachment for the projection of slides on the plasma TV for teaching. Colored printouts of labeled microanatomy sections of all tissues are displayed for students for reference during the routine practical sessions. The lab is also well equipped with tissue processing instruments, e.g. tissue embedder, microtome etc. to make slides for teaching purposes. The microanatomy slides prepared in the department are in overwhelming demand from various other medical, dental colleges all over India and abroad.

Museum

The renowned museum was initiated by Prof. Dr. S S Godbole whose meticulous research, commitment and perseverance produced the finest specimens in anatomy. It exhibits nearly 1000 dissected cadaveric, fetal and specimens obtained from animals. The museum also displays sections of human body, radiographs, skeletons of human and other vertebrates, radiographs and developmental anatomy models. The museum collection is presented in several sections, e.g. Head and Neck, Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis, Limbs, Sectional anatomy, Nervous system, Embryology and Comparative anatomy.
Though the specimens and models are continuously added to the collection, excellent preservation techniques conserved some specimens which date back to half a decade and still show no signs of degradation. Presently, genuine efforts are being made to promote the museum as a lively source of interaction for health science students and also the public.
The museum is open from 8 AM to 6 PM and not only caters to the students and staff of the Manipal University, but also to schools, colleges and the general public. While the entrance for Manipal university staff, students and guests is free, a nominal fee is collected from the public. The renowned anatomist, Dr. R.J.Last ,on a visit to the museum simply wrote, "It's one of the best".

Clinical Skills Laboratory

Located at the ground floor of the Basic Science Building, the Clinical Skills laboratory has an excellent collection of mannequins and anatomical models. There are thirty-two stations with simulators providing students with a remarkable opportunity to practice some clinical procedures on them before handling the patients.
Some of the Simulators / Mannequins available are:
1. Intubation dummy
2. Prostate examination simulator
3. Pelvic examination simulator
4. Obstetric phantom
5. Lymphnode examination dummy
6. BP simulator
7. Injectible training arm
8. Spinal injection simulator
9. Intramuscular injector dummy
10. Male & female catheterization dummy
11. Retinopathy trainer
12. Otoscopy trainer
13. Lumbar puncture mannequin
14. Central venous cannulation dummy
15. Heart & breath sounds-mannequin

IT facility

The department is increasingly utilizing computer assisted teaching. In addition to individual laptops, the department has 8 computer terminals equipped with internet connection, scanner and printer for the staff and postgraduates

Library

The departmental library consists of an excellent collection of books on life sciences. In addition to a series of basic and standard reference books in gross anatomy, histology, embryology, neuroanatomy, it also has vast collection of books from physiology, biochemistry, medicine, surgery, paediatrics, radiology, gynaecology etc. This facilitates the learning of clinical anatomy correlation with other clinical areas.
