The Department of Microbiology and Immunology enjoys a high research profile nationally. The areas of research are broad and cover bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology and molecular biology. Our research interests cover topics as diverse as the bacterial and fungal populations of human infections or food microbiology, the epidemiology of infections in humans, and diagnosis of autoimmune diseases.

Our reputation in research productivity and research training is excellent. At any one time, approximately 10 -15 MD students are enrolled in the department. For the past few years, the department has been getting financial support from both peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed research grants.

Our laboratories were recently renovated and are fitted out to a high standard with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. We also enjoy close research collaborations with many prominent groups and individuals at neighboring institutions, as well as with colleagues interstate.
