Undergraduate students are trained from the Ist Semester through the VIIth semester in Community Health with an optimal blend of

  1. Didactic Lectures
  2. Community based field visits to study the health status of the Community during clinical postings in the III rd semester, IV semester and VII semester
  3. Seminars and interactive tutorials with active student participation
  4. Practical exercises in Epidemiology Exercises, Nutrition and Health statistics
  5. Demonstration of various spotters on nutrition, immunizing agents, contraceptives, entomology, insecticides, disinfectants, community health utilities and protective devices are done during these postings.
  6. Students’ research projects and guiding them on preparation of health education materials which will be used by themselves in the field either during field activity or during internship
  7. MCQ question pattern

First clinical posting (during their III Semester):

  1. Students are exposed to community-based surveys to study demography, Housing & environment, Nutritional status of the community and Social Medicine.
  2. Demonstration of various spotters on nutrition, immunizing agents, contraceptives, entomology, insecticides, disinfectants, community health utilities and protective devices are done during their posting.
  3. Visits to PHCs, Anganawadi and old age homes etc

Second clinical posting (During their IV Semester):

  1. Community health appraisal, Community diagnosis, Morbidity measurement, Health education in the field
  2. Medico-social case studies in the hospitals
  3. Visits to places of community health importance are the components

Third Clinical Posting (VII Semester):

  1. Students trained in formulation & execution of research projects in community on the topics of Community health importance.
    OR
    Students are trained in preparation of health education materials and effective use of the materials prepared by them in the field. Students have prepared the materials. Video films, Power point presentations, Flip charts, posters and hand outs/ booklets etc
  2. Medico social case studies are done either at the hospitals or at field practice area of the department.

Departmental Activities:

Interns Training Programme

Interns are posted for two months in the Community Medicine department during their Internship period. They are involved in Preventive, Curative and Health promotional activities. They are posted to Primary Health Centres (Ullal, Moodabidri and Kotekar), Outreach clinics, and Urban Health Centre. Interns are also involved in the regular health check up camps held in various villages of Dakshina Kannada District organised by the department and with the participation & cooperation of various voluntary organisations. Regular monthly camps are held at PHCs and their peripheries with the assistance of teaching hospital

Outreach Clinics at Shivanagar, Boloor and Jeppinamogaru are held on regular basis.

Urban health training centre at Lady hill functioning on regular basis (Morning

9AM – 7.30PM). Urban health training centre at Bejai functioning on regular basis (Morning 9AM- 1PM)

The department of Community Medicine and PG’s of Medicine/ Surgery Assisted Govt. Health Authorities provided health care services during the strike of Govt. Medical Officers from 10th to 14th November, 2008 in Mangalore.

CHC/ PHC are under the technical supervision by one faculty on monthly basis.

The department conducts health camps & school health programmes at various places as a part of Interns Training programme under ROME Program.
