From the Director’s table
The requirement of the higher education has changed considerably over the period of time. The traditional class room & laboratory centred learning is no more sufficient to cope with the fast paced changes in technology. Industries are now looking for employable man power and not a mere qualified technical candidate from a University.
In today’s changing scenario, the education systems has to flexible enough to impart “any time any where learning” knowledge. The knowledge and skill qualification method, which makes the education system more meaningful, is preferred over the time bound learning method.
Manipal Centre for Information Science (MCIS), established in the year 1998, launched its first industry oriented post graduate programme in the area of Health Care IT, in association with GE Medical Systems, Bangalore. Over a period of time the institute took up more initiatives in the area VLSI CAD (of semiconductor chip design) and Embedded Systems. The institute has a very strong industry interface with leading companies like, Philips, Synopsys, CENER Technology Solutions, Manipal Dot Net, Axiom Design Automation, NXP Semiconductors etc. Most of the programmes are industry driven & students carry out projects defined by the industrial counter parts during their course of their study. The projects are jointly monitored by faculty from MCIS and project managers from industries.
Our own students who passed out from the institute act as a strong interface with industries to build more strength to the existing system at Manipal. The scholarships to MCIS from the industries (GE & NXP Semiconductors), acts as testimony to the quality of the graduates from the institute. The post graduate “Corporate Programme” derived from the campus run programmes prove the relevance to the industry. The large pool of siblings who joined our institute and the feedback from our alumni acts as a testimony for the quality education at MCIS.
The atmosphere at MCIS is free and flexible. It encourages group activity over individual excellence. It provides learning space for the candidates, who are not well- versed with programming, when they join the institute. A week long programming class in the beginning of the semester brings students, who come from a non-programming background, to the level required.
On the whole MCIS is an institution for the innovative learners who can excel beyond the text book and class room form of teaching.
On behalf of all the staff I welcome you all to experience learning mechanisms at MCIS.
