The increasing demand for integrated circuits along with strict price/performance goals, time constraints in design and deployment and the rapid developments in semiconductor process technologies are driving us towards designs of deep submicron and even below. With the advent of deep sub micron technologies, conventional design flows and methodologies need to be appropriately enhanced. Thus, the current CAD environment supporting automated higher abstraction levels like system level synthesis as well as more manual and lower abstraction levels such as layouting, have to be correspondingly upgraded.
At MCIS, the VLSI Design group aims at the development of skills required for the rapidly growing "Electronic Desing Automation" (EDA) industry as well as VLSI Desing industry. The strategy used is based on building a thorough base in "C" and associated advanced "data structures". In the first and second semesters we train the students comprehensively in the field of both the EDA tool development and VLSI design by imparting the required theoretical knowledge and exposing the students to the cutting-edge EDA tools from Synopsys, MAGMA, XILINX, MENTOR GRAPHICS, Altera etc The second full year is completely dedicated to a live project either in the industry or any R&D centres.
COMPLETE CHIP EXPERIENCE
MCIS has actively participated in full custom chip design projects in association with Karnataka Microelectronics (KarMic), Manipal. Under this program, the faculty and VLSI Design students of MCIS have been trained in many aspects of VLSI design such as fabrication, digital design, simulation, layout and testing by the leading industry experts. After the training, the students have completed three moderate size chip designing projects starting from algorithm to place and route using MAGIC and SPICE tools. The designs have been fabricated in process runs of MOSIS, USA in 1.6 um technology and the students have tested the packaged ICs. Successive batches of VLSI Design students continue to benefit from the complete chip experience of these projects
Eligibility
The candidate from BE/BTech in Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, Telecommunication, Computer Science or any other relevant branches in Engineering/MCA/MSc in computer science will have direct entry into the 2nd year (i.e. 3rd semester).
