Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments of the college established along with the inception of MIT itself. Since then, the department has registered a steady growth in all fronts of its activities. Started as a one man department in 1957, it now has 18 faculty members on roll. The department has the distinction of having 12 PhD holders in the various fields of research spread across Pharmaceutical Sciences, Solid state Physics, nano materials and thin films, atmospheric sciences etc. At present, four of the faculty members are working on their PhD degrees, of which, two are being guided by only the internal members. Three projects have been successfully completed by the members. The department tries to imbibe the spirit of science among engineering students by inviting articles based on science/ applied science topics and then displaying them on the notice boards.
The department caters to the needs of UG students by teaching them subject like quantum mechanics, optics, semiconductors and such of other subjects which are very much important to engineers. The faculty is also involved in PG teaching and research work. Members have published more than hundred research papers in reputed journals aside from many papers in conferences/ symposia. All are actively participating in different scientific deliberations held across the country. Indigenous built crystal growth apparatus, X-ray diffractometer, y-ray spectrometer (MCA), radiation dosimeter, GM counters are some of the specialised instruments the department possesses in addition to common instruments of any Physics lab.
