Master of Computer Application (MCA) is an AICTE approved Post-Graduation program in computer application spread over six semesters. This program is exclusively designed to meet the constantly evolving IT industry requirements. The fact that industries are accepting MCA students into their company is testimony to the quality of program and its credentials.

MCA graduates are working their way up in becoming system programmers, business analyst, system analysts and application programmers. Application areas include Software engineering, Management Information Systems, Software Quality Management, ERP, transaction processing (such as banking, stock exchange order processing) simulation, database management, e-commerce, Web enabled service, Animation, Content Development, IT Consultancy, design support and data communications, Computer networking, Data Security, embedded technologies etc.

The Students of MCA are very competent in project development as their exposure to project development is made very prominent and compulsory in the academic curriculum at MIT Manipal.

During their final semester students would undergo a six months training program exclusively for software development in either commercial application or systems. The project is aimed at implementing all analysis, designing & programming tools that have been learnt during the entire program curriculum.

Research Activities:

The department has three research groups viz., Data and Knowledge Discovery, Multimedia Computing and Communication and Computer Vision. There were several research projects undergoing in this area. The department offers PhD program affiliated to Manipal University and currently there were 5 research scholars doing their PhD. Students of the department are actively involved in all the research projects. One of our faculty Dr. Karunakar A. Kotegar has finished his 16 months of Post Doctoral Research Fellowship at Software Research Centre of Athlone Institute of technology Athlone, IRELAND. The memorandum of understanding is working out with Athlone Institute of Technology, IRELAND for student and faculty exchange program.

Technical and cultural activities:

Department has recently conducted a national level M. C. A. Fest, Techno Melange 2010 with 22 colleges participating in the event. This tech fest is organized by the students of the department since 2004.

Department has also conducted a Workshop on Recent Trends in Information Security in association with EMC2 to enable faculty with recent technological advances.

In the past eight months our M. C. A. students comprising of all the three batches have won a total of five overall championship at national tech fests conducted at NMAMIT, RVCE Bangalore, St. Josephs Mangalore, St. Aloysius Mangalore and Christ college Bangalore.

Few students selected for the open source gaming projects to be done on Android platform to be taken further by Robosoft team.

Industry/Academia Interaction:

Initiated Memorandum of understanding with Athlone Institute of Technology, IRELAND for Research collaboration and student exchange.

An international exchange program as part of IAESTE for MCA students too.
