The mission of the Department of Biotechnology at MIT is to; educate students to become outstanding biotechnology engineers, capable of working in diverse roles and industries all over the world, to conduct innovative and beneficial research with an eye on the future, and to provide service and expertise to the biotechnology profession and society.

The Bachelor’s programme is designed to provide students both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in biochemical engineering, molecular biology, enzymology, bioinformatics etc. and to keep up with the latest developments while also catering to the needs of industrial biotechnology sector. This curriculum is good enough to mould a student to be a much sought-after graduate ready for employment in academia, government, research, industry, engineering and management positions.

The department has state-of-the-art laboratories. All the members of the faculty are from reputed universities/institutions with an engineering background. In addition to the UG programme, the department offers two M.Tech programme in Biochemical Engineering and  Industrial Biotechnology and PhD in Biochemical Engineering.

Industrial visits are organized for our students at periodic intervals. Students are also exchanged for a brief period for sharing of academic expertise with international universities. This is a regular feature under the IAESTE programme. Students secure an internship for 3 – 6 months at a university abroad and work on a specific area of focus.
